looking at upgrading my rig and going 4k

i'm assuming i'm going to need obviously a new monitor and a new GPU?

is this feasible on the budget above?

current spec

27" dell 1080p
2600k @4.4ghz
2x 280X running mildly overclocked
16gig DDR3 1866
couple od Samsung ssds for games sitting on

obviously my current setup is more than happy at 1080p I guess what i'm really asking will a 980Ti cut 60fps at 4k? or am I looking at £1500?

You could go with an ultrawide 34" monitor for that budget. As I said in another thread 4k still requires a lot of GPU grunt and still you won't see spectacular FPS. Up to you whether you want the resolution or the FPS.

I would consider 1440p (possibly 1440p 144Hz) as despite the new GPUs and such, none of the single GPUs will run 4K at high settings in all games happily. If you're happy toning down the settings a bit with dual 980Ti/980 then that could work, dual 980Ti would whack you out of the budget

1440p still is quite an upgrade from 1080p, it looks very nice indeed

get a 4k monitor see how your rig performs, you can run at 1080 if you need to, the difference in quality from a std 1080 monitor wont be noticable when running 1080 on a 4k monitor

You don't need to upgrade anything except a monitor and GPU - Asus 4k monitor and Nvidia 980 ti

You PCU will be good for at-least another 2 years .
