Finnish man fined £83,000 for speeding because he earns £10.1 million

You're still not getting it.
5% would seriously impact on most people earning 20K but 5% on 10 million would leave that person shrugging their shoulders saying 'So what?'.
You would have to fine the millionaire a lot more % to hurt them in the same way you would the lower wages person.

omg no please I GET IT... I GET IT...

You seemed to have shifted your view since i last read the thread. :p

The Fine hurts everyone - if not why would this guy be even complaining?

Simply do not break the law if you dont want to pay fines.

whats £80? a 5th of someones take home per week roughly £ 400? In the UK - sure ramp that up to whatever a wealthy person earns. Whatever maths you deem to be fair...

Financial incentives are incredibly deterrents if they actually deter you.

Wait? What?

The argument of constant percentages I can understand. I disagree with it but I can understand the logic.

But your idea? Arbitrary fines. Well, fines based on how little an individual would have left in his bank account?

Crazy.

Things i still personally find mind blowing highlighted by the thread.

A) Using the word jealousy. I think that shows how deeply and personally people abhor other people that succeed financially. Psychopathic tendencies there.

B) How a % based fine/deterrent is "Unfair" and punishes the rich.... It could not be fairer. 5% is 5% is 5%.... Of course 5% of £10m is more than 5% of £20k - duh.
(The guys argument was that he earned a lot of money in that Tax year previous, that didn't reflect in his lower earnings in this tax year and time of the estimation)

c) Money should give you the right to flaunt/avoid/ignore the Law because you have "earned" it. Money already buys you justice and the best legal representation in the UK

If you have issues with any of these 3 i wouldn't set foot in Scandinavia.

We don't live in Scandanvia. We don't have proportionate fines. We are unlikely to ever have such fines.

Whoah tiger, I'm on your side, please read the thread.

The rich person should get exactly the same fine as the poor person because the points hurt both of them anyway.
To actually hurt the rich person money wise you would have to take more % than the poor person until they actually felt it and this is why it's a bloody stupid pathetic idea thought up by people who are jealous of people with more money than them.

Now apologise :)

Indeed. Some bizarre suggestions being posted.

And you read the bloody thread.

And you.
I haven't shifted from my stance.
I maintain that the same fine should be paid by everybody but to hurt a rich person more you would have to fine them A LOT more and that's why it's stupid.

Apologies! I thought you was suggesting it. Not arguing against it using the example. Obviously :p

All the people who agree with the proportional fine seem to think that all people live proportional lifestyles when it's not true so to hurt some of the rich you would have to fine them even more.
This would mean that there would have to be a department setup to work out exactly the % of fine that would actually upset that person.

Of course it can also work the other way round.
I know a couple who both earn around £50,000 each and the other week her car broke down and she was told it would cost £1,000 to repair.
AFAIK the car is still in their drive unrepaired because they can't afford it yet.
The fictitious department might actually come up with a much lower figure because any amount of fine to them would be a setback.

I have not read the thread but in Czech when I moved here the max fine I think was 1000 CZK which was like £25 at the time (%8 of what a normal person took home). That was a lot of money to local but if you had a bit of cash you just did not care about the speed limit. I was young and stupid and would drive too fast because I could afford the fine.

what is dimples argument?

fining the poor is okay.
but rich people have wealth they damn well earned and it should be untouchable in any amount that might actually deter people from putting a foot down.

personally I would happily instead of an £80 fine or whatever poor people get the rich people could work those £80 off in hours of community service at minimum wage instead of paying a % of earnings for the previous tax year

must be a far better deterrent now I'm expecting dimple to come out with some rubbish like but they earn 1k an hour and making them work a penalty off at minimum wage is ridiculous because these people have money so they should have privilege too

Everybody should pay the same fine no matter what they earn because points on your license is an equal deterrent. The fine is basically for admin fees anyway.
I am a low earner but I certainly don't think you should be punished because you earn more (or inherited).

I know rich people, unfortunately I aint one of them. :(

83k to him is like £830 to us normal folk. I agree a high fine and a little OTT, but that's they way they roll over there.

Put it this way rich people don't count in tens! :p
