I have been looking for a new GPU for a while now and I have been toying with a few but can't settle because the prices are shifting so much and I'm not sure what to go ahead with.
At the moment I'm gaming at 1080p.
I have been looking at
970s which are roughly £200
980s which are around £330
Titans which are around £300

There are pros and cons to all of them and my gut instinct is saying to go for a titan as it seems the best value for money in the "mid range" Nvidia cards. But I'm not sure if its worth the extra £100 on a 970. If a 970 would last me until the better cards come down in price then maybe that's the way to go.

Very confused!

It all depends on your Resolution surely?

I'm at 1080 at the moment and my current card does well with most games. Its just struggling with the newer releases. But I'm thinking maybe I need to plan for the future a little and spend that extra while the prices are as they are

What have you got currently ?

I assume your looking at the original Titans ?

I have a gigabyte 750Ti at the moment, iv not had my rig long to be fair as iv only just made the switch from consoles but I'm happy to invest more time and money into it now :)

Yeah the original titans :)

The sensible choice would be a 970 as it is gonna destroy 1080p. If you really have a burning hole in your pocket then a 980 would give some more frames.

Facing a similar situation a couple of months ago I chose the titan cause, I mean c'mon, it's a titan

That's exactly my predicament :p
The 970 is the bang for Buck sensible choice and an all round very good card from what iv read on here.
The 980 isn't that much better to warrant the price increase.
However the titan has 6GB Which is always handy. However it is the last of a dying breed, can't remember he specifics but the 980 would last in a rig for longer or something...

You say 6GB is always handy but I haven't found a use for it yet. At 1440p I have rarely seen about 3GB used in titles like witcher 3, gta v, BF4, skyrim (with HD texture packs) and crysis 3. When I tried shadow of mordor's ultra uber texture pack I saw the vram rise about 5GB but saw zero difference.

U need to clarify that you are looking at an 'old' Titan, which both the 980 and 970 beats hands down.

My advice would be to keep the hell away from Ebay or 2nd hand GPU market places in general.... Prices sellers ask for thier old tat tend to be astronomical all things considered. The price of any mass produced consumer product, 2nd hand, and in good nick has to be around the 66% mark or less, or go home. On Ebay, sellers seem to think anywhere between 85% - 105% is a fair price.

Sure, 2nd hand 980s are going on Ebay for 330 - 350 GBP (or 400, and even 450 GBP), but you know for just another 50 GBP, you get yourself a split new 980, with full warranty, with no prior usage, with a free game, with full statutory rights and protection incase the goods are faulty. Cheapest 980 on OcUK is 390 GBP right now, but I have seen as low as 350 GBP at certain €uro retailers. Don't let yourself be fleeced by the flea bayers.

I am sure that there are good 2nd hand GPU deals to be had on the likes of Ebay, but only the very early birds will get to those. I am sure you have better things to do with your time other than wait on someone posting a decent 2nd hand GPU at a reasonable price on Ebay.

Single card i'd go for a 970/980 over a original titan at the prices you quoted. The extra vram on the titan is less use in a single card situation (eg you will run out of grunt before you make the best of it), Yes there will be exceptions to this but for 99% of games it wont help.
Nvidia also seems to be concentrating on drivers for maxwell so a better future imo

Buy them 2nd hand like I do. Titans are now ancient news with the Ti series out. Recently I could've picked one up for 280 bucks so desperate was the guy to sell it to get ready for his Ti. I opted for an even 'cheaper' 980 GTX. It slices through Witcher 3 with a laugh and I have no desire to spend another few hundred bucks for an extra 10 FPS when I'm already locked at 60 FPS.

if you can wait a few weeks, see how the new AMD cards effect the market. We may yet see some more price movement due to this. I am looking at a new card to move from 1080 to 1440 and am waiting for things to settle down.

Original Titans maybe, but not the newly released TitanX

Yea older Titans. Buy them for around 280-350 (the ranges I saw). Bought a GTX 980 for the same price on the lower end of that spectrum. Was extremely close to buying a Titan for 330 when I saw the 980GTX and checked Anand benchmarks. Says it destroys the Titan so I opted for that instead... at a cheaper price.

Amd will have zero affect on the market, they have lost another generation i'm afraid.

The 980 has a little more power than a titan black so i would never spend £300 on an older card with no warranty thats weaker than a card that £30 more brand new.

980 all the way.

This. It could pay to wait for June 16th, when AMD release their 300 series lineup. It may affect the prices quite a lot, if AMD are aggressive with their pricing.
