Hello all

In short, I need to change my 51 reg Clio mk2, it's just old, I'm over 6 ft, the seat is now naff, I pretty much have a bad back constantly while driving it :(

So, I would like a new/used car, just something better than what I have...Ultimately comfort is more of a concern as I've never had a fast car so it doesn't really bother me THAT much as long as it moves.

My issue? Money, I'm skint, I currently put £100 a month away for wear and tear use or whatever may do me over during the year, after this I don't have much spare cash, possibly £50, this pretty much rules out a brand new car as I A) don't have a deposit and B) can't afford £200+ a month going out of my account for 5 years with a block payment on the end.

What are peoples thoughts? What types of car? A friend says a Focus will do, but I don't know if a longer car would be better (like a mondeo or saab 93 or something) - I'm also presuming I'm just going to have to get a 0% purchase card and buy out right then figure out some form of plan for the next few years...Obviously I could just get an older car that's from 2005 onwards or something...

Help :(

When money is *that* tight I'd be asking myself if a car is really a financial burden you really need?

It's more to help sort my back out, as currently driving just aggravates it if that makes sense?

So I need to do something.

Well how much have u got to spend in total? Is it all going to be on monthly payments no matter how cheap?
U will get a nice mk3 petrol Mondeo on a 2005 for about 2/2.5k that will be a massive step up in quality to the Clio. Mine is more than big enough and I'm 6,2.
Cheap to run and maintain and should be reliable. Would avoid the Saab If your low on money as they could throw up some massive bills if the break

I get that, but do you HAVE to have a car in your life? What do you use a car for?

I dont want to sound harsh but with £50 and whatever an old Clio is worth, you just can't afford one. If doing without a car is possible, it's certainly what I'd be looking at

Failing that, maybe looking at lumbar support (like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Memory-Fo...069?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3f3bf3d49d) or even changing the seats in the clio

As said, I can probably stretch to £150 but I'd need to do some more sums in my head.

I'll take a look at some older cars (05 onwards) and see what I come up with.

Thank you :)

Pretty much, work is a 40 miles round trip, doesn't sound like much but it's over half hour each way, so cycling would be out the question for me, particularly due to one of the roads on the way.

Not harsh at all, I like honesty :p

I looked at changing the seats for the seats from the sport, they're £100 from a scrappy I think, I guess I'd need to save up and just buy one and try it. Currently I just use a small pillow but sometimes that doesn't help.

The internal space is just too small for me, I can put the seat back which is fine, but then I can't reach the steering wheel correctly so I end up having to lean fowards, or I then need to lean forwards to change gear correctly. If I move the seat closer, I then feel cramped and my knees are round my head (exaggeration obviously)

What £150 p/m? On finance? Given u have a 40 mile round trip the Mondeo will be ideal. Just look for a good example with less than 100k. Or if u only want to spend 1k a Focus mk1 on a 2003 could be had for that and will still be a step up to a clio

How would a Mondeo fare in terms of petrol compared to the Clio? I assume I'd spend a bit more there? But yes I could have £150 to go on finance or savings or to pay a card off I think

Oh I might be misunderstanding - I thought you meant you had £50 spare cash, maybe £100. Not *per month*

If you can do £100-£150 per month then thats a different story - a 2-3k mondeo would be perfect. You can get 0% credit cards for 23 months, £100pm fixed payment for 20 is £2k plus a few hundred quid for your clio. Whether you'd get approved for a c/c with sufficient credit limit is another question though!

It'll use more fuel obviously, it's a larger car. Assume 30mpg in the real world for a 2.0 petrol. Spend £100 rather than £150 per month so you've got some leway

I've had a couple of cards over the years (one I use every day) so don't see why I wouldn't be approved, but it would depends on the card amount I guess.

That's why I'm wondering if a Focus would be more suitable to avoid too much expenditure? As currently I'll be using £40/50 a week or so.

Its always a balance with these things. Is your Clio petrol or diesel? If it's a petrol it'll be doing about 40mpg, so dropping to 30 is a 25% drop in mpg which means you'll be spending 50-60 per week rather than 40-50. Depends how you drive though!

Yeah, I'm not a speedster by any means :D Clio is currently a 1.2 Petrol, so a hair dryer basically.

I've seen a few 1.6 Focus' with sub 70,000 miles on them for sub 2.5k, MK2's mind rather than MK1.

Look at the Peugout Just Add fuel scheme

Migth be do able for you? New Car, warrenty, insurance etc etc - just pay for fuel?

Just a athought - Yes its a peugout but hey if it gets you out of bind for 2-4 years then maybe its the way forward?

Failling that - learn to ride a Moterbike / Scooter. Very very cheap to run etc, but still allow's ya to get about?

With car leases, many of them have ~£0-200 set up fee, then £100 a month for 36 months. (limited mileage)

After that you can either return the car and take out a new one, or spend £x000 to buy it from them.

Any of the cars available on just add fuel within budget wouldnt be much bigger than the clio
