Golf Mk5 GT TDI ... Write off or not ?

Hello all,

I had an unfortunate run in with another car today (the pulled out of a side road into the side of me). The driver admitted fault and their insurance has offered to sort all of the things out directly without going through my insurance (and therefor not causing a premium hike)

However they (as normal will only repair if its economical) so id like some advice :-

Do you think it will be a write off ? Its a 55 plate Golf GT TDI Sport (140k miles), as shown below there is damage to both drivers side doors and the sil that runs below them (this is attached to the door pillar and chassis). As top book price for these is ~£4000 i have a feeling it will be a bad end for this motor.

If it is written off how much should i settle for ? (Id like to get £3700+ for it as that is the rock bottom price for these locally / within 100miles) and this is a very nice example (no prior external damage, no damage to internals engine runs sweet , FSH) even to the point VW did some warranty work on the front wing (slight rust) last month.

Finally is there any tricks to getting the best write off price form them ?

Thanks For Any Input

:)

Dont settle for fill and repair job on that, push for replacement doors and id expect the full side to be painted with a silver car.

Your premiums will still go up regardless of who's paying - probably not by much but you'll still have to declare it AFAIK

Nope, A fair whack of damage I'd say, but not £4k worth.

I was looking at :-

-- 2x £1000 (for each door to be replaced and painted)
-- £500 maybe for any extras that need "fixing" like door sils and hinges

If i take the cars worth at £4000 (im guessing it will be a little less than that) its getting on for 63% of the total worth of the car. When they add on the costs for the courtesy car ect im guessing they will be getting near the 75% mark

Talked to the our insurance provider, they said as we still answer the "have you claimed on your insurance in the last X years, regardless of fault" with a firm no our premiums will not change

The write off threshold is not the full book value of the car, I believe its quite a lot lower, something like 40-60% with other factors.

Below was my other halfs car...

2010 very low milage skoda fabia with a book value of £4500 (which we received when it was written off last year)

Yeah looking around the web the number that pops up as 60% of the book value (normally mid book value) anything above that they write off. However whats not clear is if that 60% is just the repair costs or the repair plus extra (like courtesy car) that they will have to pay out if they repair

They don't tend to ask it like that though, they normally ask something like this

Do you have any accidents, losses, thefts, incidents or claims in the last 3 years (regardless of fault)?

Which you need to answer yes and it will increase your premium.

That was my understanding too, I've never seen them ask "have you claimed on your insurance"

If I fill it out as follows

Note the question "Was this claim made against your insurance policy"

My premium was increased by about 15% running that quote

Your telling me my insurance company lied Shock Horror ..... either way I really don't care as long as i end up with a car of similar value / quality in the end :/

It is almost criminal that they will put up premiums in cases where the non fault driver had no way to avoid the accident (like in my case on a narrow 1 way road .... other car pulls out into the side of you).

They may well fix your golf though, the doors have replaceable outer skins so they won't even need a whole door. That work could be done pretty quickly so the courtesy hire isn't going to cost them much either.
