Thinking of picking up a 980Ti but concerned my 2500k will hold me back too much

My 2500k is overclocked currently at 4ghz, 4.2ghz is the furthest I can take it before I need to turn the voltage up. To get it to run at 4.5Ghz stable I need about 1.5 and wasn't keen on temps. Unlucky with the chip I suppose.

Right now I am happy with my 2500k and its performance + temps, however in making the next step I was thinking of picking up a single 980ti, do you think its worth it with this GPU at this clock speed? FTR, I will be gaming at 1080p for a while until I can afford a higher resolution monitor, but this will mostly be when the 4ks come down in price. Right now I just want to the best performance out of my games, and at the highest setting and I am not necessarily in the resolution war as of yet.

choices are either buying the ti now, or wait and build a new computer from scratch, with all new parts which will probably be within the next 2-3 years.

It's fine, CPU speed isn't improving that quickly. If you get a new equivalent CPU today it will barely be any faster.

I say get the card. It looks like CPU power will become less significant with the new APIS. You should be able to max everything at 1080 with a 980ti.

Just a couple of quick questions:

A. When do these cards come out?

B. Does Overclockers take pre-order money straight away or at ship?

It's still a single card so you'll be fine. Any consideration to running a 2nd may require an i7!

A. There is no magic date because these are in crazy high demand and no manufacturers built up a decent amount of stock to meet demand. It's mainly a game of patience I'm afraid. If you are the type to be calling up OcUK every 30 minutes asking if they're there yet, you might be better off waiting until you see some actual live stock on the site from a small batch, or get an alert of stock elsewhere.

B. OcUK take your money straight away.

I see, its difficult because I was planning on selling my older cards to buy this one, but since they take money straight away I am a bit stuck since I won't know how long it will be until I will have a graphics card.

Stick with your gfx card till demand settles down. Prob be a month till stock is under controll

Will do, I have a 7950 and 970 that I need to sell. Will probably stick it on the market once I know the cards are in stock and I can pick one up

For what it's worth both my 980s went within 24hrs at asking price , and 970s seem to be far more in demand. Should have zero problems shifting it

Dont think hes botherd about shifting them so much but how long stock will take come in so he can pop them on sale rather than sell them and be without anything for a week or two or longer worst case.

I have the money to purchase the card now, I just would rather know they are in stock upon ordering first, so I can put my older GPU money towards it and save a bit.

I am in almost the same boat. I have the same CPU although not OCed at all and a 780gtx. I am playing at 1440p though on a 30" benq. Would I also be fine with the 980ti?

Mine is closer to stock than anything else so if I am alright I don't see why you wouldn't be. Also you could probably safely change clock to 4ghz without doing any voltage change what so ever.

According to Tom's hardware your 2500K is still in the top bracket of CPUs in terms of gaming performance. No need to upgrade it if you're thinking of getting a 980Ti.
