Thinking of picking up a 980Ti but concerned my 2500k will hold me back too much

I think what I will do is buy the card now and just sell the other when it is getting dispatched. I don't see it taking longer than a month (I hope not anyway).

FTR I am purchasing https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-091-ZT If anyone has any objections as to why I shouldn't and has a better alternative please feel free. I find that the clock speeds on this card are pretty insane out of the box, wonder how much further I can even push it.

You can get those clocks from any GTX980Ti in the ~1350 region if your very very unlucky even on ref. Probably ~1400+ on average.

Have no idea what that cooler can do, but being tri-fan it should be fine. I think this one might be three slot though.

Maybe get the normal AMP edition for less and just OC it.

That is a good point, it doesn't look like its a 3 slot from the picture but then it isn't exactly clear. Perhaps I should get a cheaper one, I was just hoping for a decent cooler and the 3 fan set up seemed to be the way to go, also this was before I realised those stock speeds aren't exactly impressive.

I wanted to order. But I want to wait until their in stock and the go down to the shop and pick them up. I live nearby (15 miles)

Thats convenient. No telling when they will have stock, completely in the dark at the moment. Not going to ask Overclockers because they will probably be just as vague (I.E not have a clue either). Lets hope we don't wait too long. I'll leave it until July 7th before giving them a call.

Since you probably won't have the card for a month, why not wait until AMD's new cards arrive in two weeks? It might mean that you get the 980ti cheaper.

Put the 7950 up for sale now and when ti stocks available put the 970 up as that one will be a quicker seller.

Cheers for the tip, gone and done that.

To be blunt, I really have my eyes on this 980ti, have done for a while. Already ordered, if AMD comes out with an even faster and cheaper card, well I will just take it on the chin : )

I think people are putting a little to much investment in DX12 - might help a little to start with but developers aren't going to just leave CPU resources sitting there untapped. If they aren't having to optimise/compromise around API bottlenecks and rendering loads they'll start using those capabilities elsewhere.

Yeah...was away to say that reference models are available all over the place....but obviously nobody really wants a reference model with the high temps, throttling, and fan noise.

Semi similar boat here. I want to do a total pc upgrade soon, 2500k I keep at 4ghz (same as yours, will did 4.2 but over that needs crazy volts) paired with a reference 290 pro that sounds like it wants to take off when playing witcher 3 ! at 1080p

Thing is, Witcher 3 is getting 55 to 65fps on ultra with a few bits turned down (but with hair works on). GTA5 plays well enough for me too.

I have the cash sat in the bank for a big upgrade including a screen, but its just too close to new hardware coming out right now to order anything.

Personally im going to wait until the new AMD card is out and skylakes out. A few months wait and prices may drop on the TI's, DDR4 might come down a bit more, SSD prices might drop a bit more etc.

Matt

Any cpu from sandybridge onwards from intels mainstream range will be grand with a single modern gpu. I've been through Ivybridge and several haswell chips, performance increase per generation is tiny for gaming.

There's always something newer and fatter on the horizon. Skylake is looking to be incremental, and when that's out there'll be a die shrink just about on the gpu horizon :p

Was thinking of doing the same but doesn't make much sense right now as computer still works and plays games, upgrading the GPU will only give it some longer legs for a longer time.

However I will start again from scratch in a some years, once the components you mentioned come way down in price etc.
