Smiler rollercoaster at Alton Towers - carriage collision

A 17-year-old girl injured in a rollercoaster crash at Alton Towers has had her leg amputated, it has emerged.

Leah Washington was on the front row of the Smiler ride, which crashed into an empty carriage in front of it.

Three others who were also in the front row sustained serious leg injuries, while a fifth person is being treated for internal injuries.

The theme park reopened earlier, six days after the crash, but the ride remains closed.

Ms Washington's father, David Washington, from Barnsley, said: "Leah has suffered a life-changing injury and now has many months of rehabilitation ahead of her."

Her leg was amputated above the left knee and she also suffered a fractured left hand.

Really sad. Never mind the compensation, that won't buy her the use of her leg back. :(

How does losing a leg result in financial insecurity?

One cannot discriminate on the basis of a disability.

numerous jobs that are no longer open, months/years off for physiotherapy, mental distress, ptsd, cost of artificial limbs?

He was specifically talking about the future though. I'm not saying she doesn't deserve compensation but from knowing amputees they lead a life of equivalent standard to you or I.
We have no opportunity open to us that they don't have other than front line armed forces. Which doesn't pay that well any way!

Military, professional football player. The list goes on and on. Of course they should be compensated for such a tragic loss.

Model - Heather Mills, Holiday Rep/Shop Staff surely covered by disability discrimination legislation.

I think the worst part about amupation from the sounds of it will be the phantom pains she gets - imagine getting a painful cramp in your calf muscle but there's no actual calf muscle there to stretch or massage. It's apparently awful agony.

I can't even imagine how one would cope with that. Let alone a 20 year old girl. Sure everybody is different. It's bad enough thinking of the US/UK soldiers that lost limbs from road side bombs in Iraq/Afghanistan. The length of time they've came through rehab and programmes of Help for Heroes.

That is some stress to know you have to live with this now and getting up/out of bed or going for a shower, anything really. How one takes it for granted when nothing is wrong with your limbs and now one is missing. Trying to do normal day to day stuff and now you'll need help or a new routine with an artificial leg at some point. That is some emotional stress to come to grips with for the next year or so. Especially until it has fully healed before one can decide to go for prosthetics.

Fireman perhaps but again it's not high paying. The others couldn't legally refuse her on grounds of her disability. If they did it would be discrimination. She'd also have to prove that they were likely career choices for her in the first instance.
For example I had to prove when I was involved in an accident that I had no other career opportunities to being in the raf. Which I couldn't do, I had a good set of qualifications so multiple other options were open to me. Yes she'll have short term and long term care which should be paid for and short term loss of earnings. However this doesn't write her off as an employable individual. As I say, she's protected by law.

So you think disabled discrimination is a laughing matter? Ok.

It's not discrimination, having a prosthetic leg doesn't allow you to do any particularly physical jobs.

Plus the fact she has to come to terms and deal with losing her leg, having to learn how to walk and change the way she lives her life. It's a terrible accident and I'm sure she would forfeit any money she is offered to be as she was before she went on the ride.
