Fryer dangerous?

Hi everyone,

Randomly whilst cooking (with a small deep fat fryer) I hear a noise of bubbles coming from the bottom of the tank.

Once I start to hear the noise I turn off the power at the mains and pull out whatever I was cooking.

With the power off the bubbles continue to build up. It starts gradually then and gets very loud with more bubbles and lasts about 5 minutes. It's not spilling over, but it sounds quite violent and I know it doesn't feel safe. I've got a fire blanket nearby.

It seems to be a kind of runaway reaction and I'm worried if I've came fairly close to a fire?

I've got the deep fat fryer to do chips and whatnot. I've changed the oil quite regularly and cleaned it. Today the effect happened at only 140c, I changed the oil last week.

Has anyone experienced similar or know what's happening?

sounds like water content from the food reacting violently with the hot oil

turn your fryer on when it's hot drop a tiny droplet of water inside

it does, It's just curious the way it happens because it's been cooking frozen chips for about 4 minutes quietly then really suddenly the bubbles start, they seem to be coming from the bottom of the tank.

The chips don't react violently when introduced to the oil, no excess ice or frost on the exterior.

run an extension lead into the garden and stick your fryer out there. Maybe put it in a steel bin. Sat on paving slabs.

Safety first, my friend.

Wouldn't even buy the oven chips! Just cut a spud with skin on into chunky fries, chuck in cold water bring to boil for 5 mins. Take them out use one of those oil spray thingys to give a very thin layer of oil, season and stick in oven for 20-25 mins. Double cooked home made chips.

Get an Actifry, those things are baller and can be had for like £80-99 if you look in the right places.

Odorless, healthier, safer and saves you money on electricity and oil.

You can do everything (bar battered stuff?) in it. I have used it for chips, veg, chicken legs/wings and muffins all in one afternoon!

I would not stand near it if it "blows". I've personally had a chip pan fire, when it ignite it literally goes bang.

Poor oil out into a Pyrex dish and see if it's contaminated with water.

Almost certainly isn't dangerous and just water in the oil from something or the other. Deep fat fryers are very excited bubbly things when there's moisture about.
