I have an EVGA G2 850W. Wanted to know if this is going to power my components, especially with my incoming 980 ti sli:

4790k @ 4.6 / 1.28v
Maximus Hero VII
2x 8 GB Corsair Vengeance Pro XMP
2x EVGA GTX 980 Ti ACX SC
Soundblaster Z
Corsair H105
5 120mm fans
1 140mm fan
2 WD HDD
1 SSD
5 USB devices

Is this OK, and if so, do I have overclocking headroom? Looking for a solid consensus if I do choose to keep it. I don't want to take any chances.

Nop you are borderline @ stock and over the wattage of your PSU if your OCing both CPU and GPUs.

Minimum System Power Requirement (W) is 600w for one card.

Add a second ~250w + OCs your well over 900w

EVGA 1000w P2 good? Or should I look for even more? I'll never use more than two GPUs.

It would as it's platinum, but personally I would go overkill just in case. For 3 bucks more you can get the EVGA SuperNova G2 1300W '80 Plus Gold'.

That's what I am running for 3930K + TXs in SLI. Never had problems running 1.3375 @ 4.7Ghz and GPUs OCed to 1427Mhz.

Gold 1300w vs Platinum 1000w pick your poison

I think you'll be ok with an 850W to be honest

Original Titan's were 250W TDP cards, and with a 4930K/3930K and 3 Titans all overclocked I was only pulling 900w at the wall which would be less than 800W at the PSU

overclocked systems with a single 980ti are pulling less than 400W at the wall, so add on another 250W for a second and you are still less than 650W at the wall

TDP's are not the same as actual power draw in use

I looked at that and the thing is it doesn't have eco mode which makes your PSU silent when temps are low. That's really important for me. I think I'll go for the 1000w P2.

You should be fine, online calculator shows ~620w max and a recommended 700w PSU, as you have a high quality gold rated 850w you're good to go.

NB you won't really be hitting that 620w unless you're hammering everything at once with benchmarks.

*EDIT: Ironically the calculator actually recommended the 750w version of your PSU lol*

And this is what makes me ask in the first place. If you go by raw numbers 850 is cutting it too close, but many seem to suggest power requirements are overrated in real use.

Still I won't take chances. Probably gonna go for the 1000w P2.

I used a calculator and it recommended 1000w, 830 minimum.

I'll check back in this thread later on. Hopefully will get more opinions. Thanks all.

Just checked a benchmark from Legit reviews stating a 4960X with GTX980Ti OCed to 1311/2003 pushing 417W.

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:

GeForce GTX 980 Ti - On your average system the card requires you to have a 600 Watts power supply unit.

GeForce GTX 980 Ti SLI - On your average system the cards require you to have a 900 Watts power supply unit as minimum.

africanos, some things you need to learn about before telling people to waste money on a PSU upgrade

recommendation vs. required
input power vs. output
suggested vs. measured

they've measured the power draw as 417W at the wall (which will be less at the PSU's output side) and then recommended a minimum 600W PSU... funnily enough that is Nvidia's recommended minimums they've used

do you know why? because a lot of PSU's add up the full ratings of 3.3V, 5V and 12V and call that the rating... a decent PSU will just use the 12V rating

minimum recommended are there to cover the manufacturer in case someone is using a cheapo PSU

if a single 980ti system is drawing 417W (at the wall)... how on earth do you think adding a second 980ti is going to push the sytem draw up by 500W?

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:

That guy's PSU recommendations are utter garbage and always have been.

..he recommended an 700-800w for 970SLI.

My system at peak load pulls less than 480w

A top quality 850w would be more than sufficient for 980TI SLI.

It's two different reviews one by Legitreviews (measured output) and one by Guru3d (just a recommendation).

Personally I like to be safe, not a PSU expert to be honest. Thanks for the clarification.

I would say you have more than enough powwer. Most reviews of the 980ti used overclocked rigs and the vast majority were under 400w with a single card. The G2 850w is a high quality psu built by Superflower and based on the Leadex Gold.

850w is enough will only run into problems if you try and overvolt and heavily OC

i ran SLI 780s & 780Tis on my 860w corsair and even overcloked @ 1.212v it was fine but pretty close pulled 720w from the wall

without overclocking didnt go over 600w from the wall

Just for reference Sli 980's running Heaven stock at 1367MHz as a base line pulling 490 watts

4970K @ 4.6
Oc Force MB
16 gig memory 2400mhz
2 x hd
2x ssd
3x 120 mm fans
6x 140 mm fans
Asus Xonar Essence STX II
2x led

I use about 500W absolute max with my 980s at 1530/8000.

Even if you say there is another 50% power usage for 980s, you should be ok with 100W to spare.
