Got this from Hertz:

From June 8th 2015, the paper counterpart of the UK photo card driving licence will not be valid and will no longer be issued by the DVLA. This change applies to Great Britain only and not Northern Ireland.

From June 8th when renting in the UK, Armenia, Austria, Balearics, Botswana,Canaries,Croatia, Hungary,Lybia,Mauritius,Namibia,Oman, Portugal, Slovenia, Sweden, South Africa, Sweden, and Tunisia, all drivers with a UK licence (Great Britain) will need to provide evidence of any driving endorsements. This also applies if you have a paper licence that was issued before 1998.

To save time at the counter please bring a print out of your Licence Summary. The Licence Summary will be valid with Hertz for up to 30 days from the "Date generated."

Their language is a bit odd:

why not just go for 'You can drive any motorcycle or motor tricycle'. Job done.

Well, actually, if you read it literally, you can't:

You can drive a motorcycle of a power exceeding 35kW or with a power to weight ratio exceeding 0.2kW per kg,

So you can drive a motorcycle higher 35kw or higher than 0.2kW/kg

A motorcycle of a power not exceeding 35kW with a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.2kW per kg and derived from a vehicle of more than double its power.

OR

You can drive a motorcycle less than 35kw or 0.2kW/kg, but ONLY if it is "derived from a vehicle of more than double its power."

OR

A motor tricycle with a power exceeding 15kW

So you aren't allowed to drive a motorcycle less than 35kw or 0.2kW/kg if it isn't "derived from a vehicle of more than double its power." :p

Is it sad that I can remember my DL number without looking?

Yes. The answer is yes. :(

It's not that hard to remember as it's formed from a combination of your name and birthdate with a few random characters and numbers.

I've remembered mine almost from the first day I received it.

I know my driver number, I don't however know my National insurance No, so without ferreting around looking for the card I have no idea what details they have on me. :D

At least you got a card. I've got a bit of paper that is somewhere in a drawer that I can't be bothered to find.

Cat K is interesting...
"You can drive a mowing machine or vehicles controlled by someone on foot"

So basically I can steer along a petrol powered lawn mower that's self propelling. who knew you need a lic for that!
