How upgradeable is this kit so I have a relatively powerful music production rig?

Really looking for an i7 quad core and 16gb upgrade...but will get an i5 if someone can convince me it'll be good enough.

The mobo only has two memory slots so if you need/want the 16GB, change it or get it in straightaway. I don't think you need a video card unless some music program today is somehow making use of them? That might free up for enough an i5.

The SSD is a bit poo and Kingston was naughty with that model (changed/downgraded specs). Not the only company that does this sort of thing but they should be punished through poor sales of that particular model, imo. :)

State your budget so we can offer alternatives, if you like.

Budget is whatever is value for money. I don't need insane performance at this point to be honest, so let's say no more than £500 on an upgrade.

When you say free up enough for an i5, to what do you refer, space or money? :)

Have I understood correctly that the spec is your current setup and you're asking what you should upgrade, rather than suggesting that's what you're going to buy?

If so, this all depends on what DAW you use, the size of your sound/sample library and whether you like lots of VSTs.

Generally, though, I find that memory and disks are a better bang-for-buck upgrade for a music workstation than a CPU upgrade. If you've got money to burn then by all means get an i7, but I think you possibly don't really need it.

Most DAWs have pretty low minimum requirements... but once you start adding VSTs then having lots of memory available is helpful.

Thanks, this is a great reply. And yes you are correct, this is my current setup and am looking to upgrade at some point in the near future to have my desktop as my MAIN setup, even though I'll probably use it less than the laptop I am looking to buy...thread here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18675669

I am using Ableton Live 9 Suite btw.

Yeah, Ableton really doesn't need much to run. I used to run it on an old Mac Mini for a while (think it was version 7 back then though).

Just replied to your other thread too. Always good to see musicians on here, not just gamers ;)

What makes the SSD poo btw? I'm not to knowledgeable about SSDs.

How is performance at the minute? As someone else said Ableton is fairly lightweight which is necessary so people can run it on mac etc

I would look at getting 16GB RAM only if 8GB isn't cutting it.

Also, how do I overclock my PC? I've never actually read into how to do it.

You'd need to look at getting a new cooler first :) Can get a decent one for around £20 to start you off.

Performance is fine, but I haven't necessarily been creating the most layered tracks! I'm fairly new to the whole thing, but as I said, performance is absolutely fine to be honest.

Will it fit into the case I already have?
