Do you constantly monitor the graphics card market?

Lol there is an actual reason for it. I'm not surprised you don't get it :p

You are of course completely correct I dont get it at all. I am a grown man who doesnt need to post ridiculous topics to ask others how to spend my money, so youre right, I dont get it. I dont feel the need to sit first in a benchmark thread my nob is big enough, so you are right I dont get it. As for the FPS comment, I dont notice when I'm possibly not getting that 0.01% performance that I should be, so youre right again you clever old chap, I just dont get it.

I keep upto date with the latest releases and such like, but I pay little attention to prices until it's time to buy.

I'm not the type of person to get suckered into a side grade just because a certain card has £10 off for a week or comes with game.

Personally I actually only really follow hardware when I'm due an upgrade. So for the last 6 weeks or so I've shown a keen interest in the current crop of cards and what is upcoming.

Once I actually make the purchase I kinda back out of this place. I just use my card in normal day to day use and I dont give a crap about the market until my next upgrade a couple of years down the line.

For example if I had bought an NVidia card recently I wouldn't be on this forum watching the new AMD card threads the way I do.

Sometimes I see people post in either an NVidia thread or an AMD thread and they make it clear they would never buy one or the other. I find that kinda weird that they would even bother looking in there to tell people.

Pretty much same as me, now that I got a new card, as soon as the Fury is out (curious about hbm) I probably won't be active until 16nm is approaching.

I don't follow it too closely, I just look out for the latest releases and any new technologies and developments.

I've never owned a nVidia card and whether or not I will in the future is unknown. AMD have always been at a good price point for my budget so I've always went with them. So far I've been through a 5770, 6950 and now I'm using a R9 290X. I skipped the 7XXX series so I will probably skip the R9 39X series, or possibly try my hand at a top end nVidia card.

Yep...weighing up an upgrade and have spent a ton of utterly wasted time on tech forums and tech review sites, on Ebay constantly typing in 'GTX 980', on retailers websites constantly typing in 'GTX 980 ti' and on google constantly searching for 'Fiji XT'.

It is royally doing my head in, all because I decided that I might upgrade my desktop HD 7970 GPU....but of course, I only want the best. The best for me that is, not necessarily the most expensive fastest ott gpu.

  • I would loathe to splash out on a reference 980 ti, only to have to put up with all that noise and temperature in my case....

  • But from what I can make out, the AIB partners cards with their own coolers on aren't a whole lot better for noise and temps.....

  • So that means a 980 ti Hybrid....ah, but they aren't available yet and they are a touch more expensive and in 18 months time all these 28nm GPUs are going to get totally blown out the water by the 14nm based GPUs....

  • Because of 14nm process on horizon, would this be a very inopportune point in time to shell out 600gbp on a GPU (fkn ridiculous amount to play a few video games)? And therefore should I just settle for a 'cheap' GTX 980 in the meantime? 400 GBP new....erm, Nein Danke! Going for around 360+ on e-bay, ...seriously GTF Outta Here!

  • But what about Radeon Fury/Fiji XT...
    Will it be the bomb?
Will it not be the bomb, but will it drive prices down???
    etc.....???

And round and round it goes in my head. Most pathetically of all, it is summer, I am gaming for about 2-3 hours late at night when I am at home (i.e. from now until 2am), I am gaming on my downstairs TV via my laptop powered by a GTX 980M, am playing the Witcher and am perfectly happy with the performance I get, and after that I shall do GTA V, again perfectly happy with the performance I get.....I DONT EVEN BLOODY NEED A DESKTOP GPU RIGHT NOW.

Yet, here I sit in a OCD stupour over graphics cards.

I am not right in the head, and neither are most of you, regardless of how you want to dress it up.

It is the internet wot did it.

I try to keep a general idea of whats going on but then my interest intensifies when I'm planning any type of purchase. Right now I'm looking for a new GPU so I'm in here every day :D

Not always. I only start intense research a good few months before I expect to purchase. Following pricing trends and immersing myself in benchmarks and all the news regarding the latest scandals (e.g. W3 Kepler handicap, 970 3.5GB VRAM) helps me make the best decision when it finally comes time to put my money down. I do the same with most big purchases.

Spent a while looking at monitors before I bought one, had also been looking at PS3's a while before buying one. Though less time spent looking those up, since the choice is less complicated and they are usually cheaper. IMO, a monitor should never outcost the graphics card used to power it. If one can spend £600 on a monitor for a £300 graphics card, they're better off with a £300 monitor and a £600 graphics card. It's a no brainer... better performance for the same price.

I keep a loose eye on it, but take a lot more interest closer too new release time usually too see if old stock comes up at bargain prices and tempts me too buy

If I can't afford the kit, I tend to shy away from keeping up with the tech. I come back many months later (even years in some cases) and find it's all changed and have to play catch up again. Whilst I have kit to use, I keep abreast-ish. If I'm into some topic then I will go into overdrive for a while.

No need to monitor anything, my GTX690 will be future proof for a long long time, I can't see any single GPU coming close and no game will need >2GB at 1440p any time soon :D

Only thing I will be doing is checking what is available come upgrade time, and then what is planned for the next few months to see if I should wait or not.

Planning a massive upgrade sometime this year - GPU/CPU included

What!? A massive upgrade now, at a time when both teams are releasing ultra expensive high end GPUs, on the same old recylded 28nm process that has been around for about 4 years now!?

Aren't you better to leave that massive upgrade another year or so until the 14nm GPUs are around? Next generation of GPUs will absolutely murder the current gen. I will be like 2 generations of an advancement, cos 20nm has been missed.

Also, if you have an i7 anytime since Sandybridge, there is absolutely no point in upgrading your CPU if gaming is your primary concern.

Don't forget monitor, Now the Syncs are around a nice 144hz IPS screen sounds great.
