I'm thinking of getting a scooter to go alongside my cb500 or perhaps replace it. I've gone full circle thinking about what bike I'd like next, from a small scooter, big scooter, street triple r, tiger xcx, r1200rs, s1000r and back to a small scooter again

I often take out my dad's big bikes to keep them ticking over as he pretty much just sticks to riding his scooter now unless he goes for a big ride.

I rarely go for rides because of work commitments so the only riding I do at the moment is to work or to pop in to town. Having ridden my dad's Honda SH 125 it got me thinking along the same lines as him with regard to its ease of use - I know it doesn't do anything the cb500 can't but it just has that feeling of being hassle free. The cb has a slight dark side you can tap in to and that's always in the back of my mind (sometimes the front!) - where as the sh 125 you have no option, just chill and cruise.

I have trawled through loads of reviews and non seem to give much information from the perspective I'm after, i.e. downgrading, most are from the point of view of a novice moving up, which is understandable.

I'd probably prefer a 250 or 300cc scooter so there is at least some poke to get out of trouble but once you get to that size of scooter the mpg is not far off what I can get on the cb so it seems like a bad move, with that line of thinking there's only really the 125 4 stroke option left.

With a budget of about 3k (the most I'd drop on a scooter) the only thing I can see that takes my fancy is the sh125i and the 125 pcx, both from honda because the last thing I want is a flakey POS.

TL:DR

Thinking of going from a cb500 to a scooter, recommend a 125cc 4-stroke scooter with decent mpg, low maintenance and for about £3k :D

Out of desperation and just for the looks I might go for Honda's DN-01, it's not really a scooter, but that's about as far as I'd go towards one again. It would feel like to much of a step backwards for me. May as well slap L plates on for the comedy (is that illegal on a full license? I might put some on my VFR just to see what happens). There are plenty of good commuter bikes without having to stoop that low. And how is a bike less convenient than a scooter? Is it because when you crash them you get a round of applause? The only two things with a scooter are under seat storage and mpg. But a decent commuter bike with a top box or tail pack will do the same. These idiots riding scooters in shorts and t-shirts almost make me want to see them come off. But what's even more entertaining though is to see scooter riders in leathers. Oh yeah, it's time to get the camera out.

I'm only kidding, get one. It'll be amazing. Post some pictures for us.

Cbf125's can get over 130mpg, mine did constantly. I had a top box too so infinity better than a scooter. :p

I'd want to buy new as second hand hardly saves you any cash, the forza is nice but the weight is shocking for a scooter.

Just looking at the cbf125, I hadn't looked at them because I was looking at twist and go bikes but the weight, price and mpg are appealing, I might have to test ride one to see what they're like

New one cb125f is apparently not as good. Should be some cheap deals on clearing the old cbf125's at the moment.

Depends on the use, I used it to commute in to a city each day so was perfect. Moved up to a Kawasaki z750 so quite a different beast and to be honest my cbf125 was probably much more suited for my use :p

I seen one guy on a scooter pootling down the A road I commute to work on a couple of weeks ago in full colour matched leathers, I'm still not sure if it was real or I had actually nodded off while riding to work!
