Dress to impress

Put it this way, I'd rather go over-dressed than under-dressed. Go all out with a nice suit, decent shoes, pocket square etc. and then you can ditch the jacket if needs be.

This is what I would do. A suit is acceptable if it was meant to be black tie. It is also acceptable if people around you dress down. Nice shirt, tie and pocket square - the tie can be removed if you discover everyone else is dressed slightly more casually.

Or contact the organisers and ask.

Invited to a Summer Ball by a client.

Conventionally balls are black tie,
but only chavs would expect black tie and not state it specifically on the invitation, so just go in a suit.
If it is mostly during the day, maybe a linen suit.

The organiser is just being ignorant, nobody likes vague invitations.
