This is why titans and TI's are not 'overkill' for 1080p

I would imagine that for 99% of people running a single 1080p screen, £500+ on a gfx card sounds like madness :)

I would also wager that 99% of people running a single 1080p screen are happy to dial some settings down from MAX.

I agree with you, no current card is overkill for 1080p most high end cards struggle to push 120 frames at 1080p for high refresh rate monitor users. Also new titles will be harder and harder to get decent frames at 1080p on 980ti
But then again I'm someone who uses 144hz panel and doesn't like frames going below 100. Most people are happy with 60fps, that's why they say it's overkill. At the end of the day, nothing is overkill, some people drive ferraris which are overkill for national speed limit and uk roads, but it doesn't stop people enjoying them. Some people like fast cars, i like high frames (and fast cars)

I game at 1080p, I want the absolute best in my PC. If I wanted what was needed, not wanted. I'd get a console.

I do as I please with my money...

And when/if my 980ti SC ACX turns up, I'll have a giant grin on my face. As once again, I'll be able to crank those settings to max when I first play a game and not worry about it. Unlike recent times where I've had to tinker with a few top end titles to get them running smoothly.

i have just upgraded from a 750ti to a titan, against most peoples advice really but i got a really good deal and it will last for this generation of games... its a marked improvement on my old card, and im only at 1080 at the moment,so for me it was a good move, i wouldnt however go and buy anything more powerful than this, as its not necessary...

This pretty much sums it, couldn't agree with you more. If you want to go down the bang for buck route, consoles are always the best shout, unless you play pc specific titles. Im just like you, i build pcs because i want raw performance with huge frame rates on a 144hz panel. At the moment high res doesn't interest me, as 144hz 1440p panels are insanely expensive and most games won't run at good frames on high res without dual high end gpus. And i prefer single cards. Id rather have all the bells and whistles and high frames than high res, but it is personal preferences. Maybe one day soon I'll get a high res panel though

You can never have too big a gpu, it gets you buttery frames on max settings now and decent frames on dialed down settings in the future. I'll keep upgrading to the latest cards at 1080p

Most people are happy to dial down settings anyway. AA is needed for 1080p but not really 4k or at most 2x MSAA on some games. That's where most of the power drops away on AA and other enhancing features like hair works on witcher 3.

Depends for me really i usually run max settings minus AA on 4k. I play around with settings even if I'm getting a solid 60fps. I see no point running the GPUs higher if there is no visual difference. Some people feel it a must have to have everything maxed out, I like to but I will quite happily turn them down if I see no difference or if there is a dramatic drop to fps. For me Having 60fps minus a few settings is much better than a stutters 40fps.

I even found I got very similar fps at 1440 to 1080p on most games, 4k for me does not run at 1/4 the fps of 1080p. Runs quite a bit better.

i've been playing crysis 3 lately and i've had to drop everything to the lowest setting on my poor i3 and gtx550 lol

it's part of the fun and i can still enjoy a game with lowest settings.

it's suprising in all these years people still focus on max settings and eye candy, what happened to just enjoying the game for what it is lol.

Both the gtx 980 and the 290x gave me 60fps on gta 5 at 2560x1440 maxed out with 2xmsaa. but 980ti is the sweetspot right now it has the power and the vram

I don't think it's about what's overkill for 1080p but what's reasonable for such a resolution.

Let's put it that way: I can run GTA 5 almost maxed with no MSAA, which I don't need, on a 970 so it'd be completely bonkers to buy a Titan X just so I can crank up a couple of settings which don't even have a visual impact that would justify the ridiculous asking price of the top-end cards, that are basically overly expensive toys. For me, even a 970 was hard to swallow.

It's obvious that games these days have settings that can make any card on the market sweat but do these settings offer a lot more in terms of sheer visual fidelity if you don't spend half of your gaming time scrutinising a stone in search of jaggies? I wouldn't say so.

I'd even go as far as to say that there isn't a single game on the market that looks great enough to warrant needing a Titan X at 1080p. Does Witcher 3 with it's cardboard grass and HL2 quality water look all that impressive? Even GTA5 shouldn't really need a Titan X to max everything out.

Thank you :) Install game, max settings. Get stuck innnnn.

I game mostly on my 50" plasma, which is 1080p. And when everything is cranked up in games, it looks damn fine!

I agree, but then I wouldn't build a PC. I find it 50/50 with the hobby, whilst I love graphics, I love gameplay. Otherwise I wouldn't play over half of my games.

So I don't agree with the "what happened to just enjoying the game for what it is lol.". It's a daft and stupid statement. And narrow minded if I may say.

I think that's narrow minded because you'll probably find that's not going to happen with the absolutely shocking game optimization we get these days.

Ultimately it comes down to what people can afford or justify paying for a card. No card is overkill. When I've read comments along the lines of "just buy a x because y is overkill at that resolution" I always think "rubbish". Buying a better card does mean a combination of smoother play, more options (if monitor failed you might want to go higher res for example), and future proofing for longer. Because x card might be enough today, the y card will still be great in z months time.

Like with most things in life you get what you pay for. I'll always go for the best I can afford OR justify paying, I would never settle for less with the idea "anything more is overkill" when I would be willing to pay more for something obviously better, unless ongoing costs are involved,(ie, I wouldn't buy a 10 bed house if I could afford it if I only needed 3 :).
