Student support grants likely to be axed

If things couldn't get any worse for students so far. The poorer in society are getting shafted further.

Grants given to the poorest university students could be cut as part of savings the Department for Business has to find, BBC Newsnight understands.

Proposals to start phasing out grants, worth up to £3,387 a year for students from less well off households, were first drawn up in 2013.
Back then, Nick Clegg, the ex-deputy prime minister, blocked the proposal.

But ministers are reconsidering the idea as they seek to find savings ahead of the Budget, Newsnight understands.

Fair play to Nick Clegg for stopping that going through, shame he isn't there to try and stop it again. I fear this will go through with nobody to reign in David Cameron's attack on the poor. When fees went up to £9,000 it actually ended up costing the tax payer more! Shows what these conservative clowns are capable (or incapable) of doing.

Opinions?

Judging by that statement, you seem to be uneducated.

Then perhaps you should demonstrate that by forming an educated response, which you haven't managed so far.

You can try taking your own advice :).

It is another move by a Tory government that is motivated by ideological beliefs. What more is there to say?

The government does not like certain groups of people, poor people are one of those groups.

Thank you. :)

This current Tory government certainly doesn't. Ridiculing the poor is only going to get them voted out in the next GE. They decide to attack the poor rather than deal with the real problem which is state pensions, costs way to much and of course is protected by this Tory government. Can't be anything to do with all the pensioners voting Tory to keep their overly generous pensions.

This goes beyond ridiculing them, it is an ideological move against the poor (a vulnerable group). This would prevent/deter a lot of students going University and seeking the benefits that entails (not just to get a degree).

The biggest mistake people have made with the current government is to think that they are anything other than self serving.

Yup, but sadly we have to put up with this Tory government for 5 years. Hopefully they won't completely **** things up whilst they are in office. I'm still pretty confident that many Tory voters will regret their decision within 6 months of them coming into power.

Being someone that currently relies on welfare money to keep afloat i'm really not keen on the tories. I have had no help in trying to get a job at all, within the last 8 weeks i must have made in excess of 40-50 job applications and haven't heard anything from ANY of them. Nothing short of depressing.

This is disgusting. I sincerely hope it doesn't go through. We can't lock certain people out of further education for a lack of funds. The cure for cancer or something just as elusive could be made by such a person.

I would also suggest the gain to the treasury would be greater than the outlay of the grants through tax in higher paid jobs which further education unlocks.

As someone involved in higher education (Academia) this is terrible 'news' if it comes to pass.

What a time to be alive!

Indeed!

The biggest mistake people have made is to believe any party is anything but self serving.

All governments are to a degree, some more than others.

The politics of austerity are self-defeating. It is the equivalent of trade barriers in the 1930s, or the reintroduction of the gold standard; it transforms a recession in to a depression. In hindsight historians will say: what fools they were!

Claim political asylum and come to sweden. It feels like living in Britain in the 80s whe n we still had libraries. Post offices. Public beautification of towns and clean streets and all the basic perks that you would expect from living in the west. Tee hee.

/rose tinted, childhood memories.

I'm not sure grants are necessary since the system changed so that fees are not paid up front. I can see that your finances are not relevant.
