Mods: Sorry if this needs to be moved to home and garden but I thought it would get more exposure here.

So my brother in law asked to use our brown bin as he is doing some gardening - we said sure why not as we only fill it to a quarter with grass cuttings once a week.

I come home from work to find this:

Its up to the brim and overhanging looking a right mess. So I rang him asking if he was having a laugh and where he expects me to put my garden waste until collection day in 10 days time.

His reply: "You told me I could use your bin and my one is full as well, I'm sick of asking you favours, you are like a child that doesn't want to share his toys"

I'm going to let her indoors speak to them as I've had enough.

Surely the decent thing would have been to fill it 3/4 but not fill it like this and not see anything wrong with it - or am I overreacting here.

I need your advise as this could possibly be a family fallout!

If you're going to the trouble of transporting it somewhere, why not just take it to the tip?

I wouldn't have responded, just don't cut your grass for a week and you'll be fine.

You have just took a picture of your bin, uploaded it, written a post and asked for advice on a computer forum. My advice would be to divert your focus to constructive concerns. I'm guessing by your BILs reply that this isn't the only petty thing you've complained about.

I'm trying to politely tell you to get a life :p

You cut your grass every week and that fills 1/4 of your bin.
How big's your country garden attached to your mansion.

Over reaction.

Do you have an anal council who will refuse to take it if the lid doesn't fully close? If so, he's been a bit of a *******, if not just get over it, it's not the end of the world

this is exactly it the council wont take it.

But thanks for all replies I have calmed down.
If it was the other way round I would have the decency not to fill it to the brim though.

I don't think you're over-reacting in as far as I don't know about your council, but my bin men wouldn't empty the bin if it looked like that, it would be left at the side of the road and I'd have a full brown bin for a week until I could make sure the lid would close.

Both overreacting, sit down with a beer and chill. That'll dry and rot down within a few days and all fit inside, chances are you're lawn stuff will fit fine too.

Worse case it'll need trimmed to fit, he's just chucked them all in without making them short after all, 10 mins and your done.

I don't get why they don't take bins without the lids closed .

Because where do you set the line? I mean this is obviously fine, but if they don't enforce it, then people will start filling it more and more and more until it is taking the ****. Then it'll be up to the dustman to set his own rules and then the council will be inundated with phone calls complaining about how they took the bin last week even though it was more full last week, why not this week la la la.

As to the brother in law situation, just dislike him and don't let him use your bins again. Tell him that by doing him a favour it's unfairly inconvenienced you and that you'll remember it. Tell him you've had to take the excess down to the tidy tip which is what he should have done in the first place and then say no more about the subject. He's ****ing your sister, you're not supposed to like him lol.
