Whenever i play graphically heavy games like Witcher 3, my gpu temperature rises quickly up to a point where it switches my computer off and restarts it. Playing the Witcher 3, gpu hits around 78-79C after around 10 minutes of playing. This causes my pc to restart. I run these games on ultra settings. Anyone have any problems with these temperatures or what i can do? Thanks

That temperature is fine for a GPU. Are you sure its not something else like your PSU not being good enough or your CPU overheating ?

This!

A GPU hitting 79-85c will not cause the PC to reboot/switch off. This is normally caused by the power draw - the PSU cannot provide the required power, or an unstable overclock.

My Titans in SLi hit 80c/70c and I have no such issues - post your specs with overclocks, that would help :)

If you have a PSU which is up to 700w and you paid less than £40, its probably doing you a favour!

Never ever skimp on the powersupply.. ive seen so many systems die a horrible death due to cheapo PSUs when i worked as a pc mechanic in a local retail store..

Had Galax EXOC GTX970s running in SLI, the highest temps I saw was 68c. Your air flow is probably horrible or your case is very small. Strange with only one card.

As mentioned above restarts are probably a PSU issue.

79 is a little warm for a 970 but it's absolutely not causing your PC to switch off.

What are your CPU temps under full load/ stress?

What Power supply do you have? (would bet me shoes it's this that's the issue)

Specs

Intel Core i5 4690(Not overclocked) 3.5GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
8GB DDR3 Memory
Evo Labs Cronus Modular 850W PSU
Using 2 PCI-E cables for GPU

Is there a program to monitor the temp for my CPU?

Thanks

Well the temp is fine and wouldn't be the cause of the computer shutting down and if it isn't blue screening or hard locks, I doubt it is the CPU, so the last port of call is the PSU. I don't know much about the one you have but I would beg borrow another PSU to see if that fixes it.

Could be a reference card, in which case, perfectly normal temps.

Well it could be a BSOD issue, but not configured to show a BSOD or save to a dump file!

Ran a stress test on my CPU with Intel Processor Diagnostic and the temperature was recorded as 40C below maximum. So that should rule out the CPU?

I pretty sure it's not a BSOD issue as i have configured Windows to show me a BSOD and not automatically restart.

I will test out another power supply shortly to see if this fixes my problem. Thanks for the help.

I would put money on it being the PSU. It's not even listed in the PSU review database and the unit is only about £45 from what I can find - not a quality unit and would bin immediately.

The op doesn't state the exact model of card so very difficult to determine if the temp is ok or not. Apart from reference, I know the non-reference Inno3D and Zotac 970's are also pretty poor at cooling and hit 80C+ easily.

The 970 could be overclocked too far though so maybe look at clocking back to stock.

The brand of my GPU is Galax 970 and I haven't overclocked it.

Evo Labs Cronus Modular 850W PSU that's your problem right there, that PSU is generic junk inside it.

Save yourself the headaches troubleshooting that is the problem.
