Apply with a new supplier, switchover takes approx 4 weeks. If you have any outstanding balance then it may be an idea to clear this first or they may raise an objection to the switch. Not much else could cause any problems other than that really.

Having an outstanding balance should not prove an obstacle as you can pay it off. Just take a reading and then ask your current supplier for a bill. If you can access your account online it will tell you if you are in debit or not and usually you can make a payment though your account.

I switched away from Npower when I had a £1.5k balance outstanding, with no problems at all :p (although it was their fault (which is the reason I switched in the first place) and I would have given them a load of **** if they'd said a single word about it )

As I said, it's entirely up to the supplier. We have about £150 outstanding with SSE and said they would object if we tried to switch and we could not transfer that, so we've upped our DD to get rid of that over the next few months so we can change. Where I work we have raised objections due to minimal balances outstanding before but we can take on and transfer debt as long as the customer informs us and the new supplier agrees to take it on. We'll only take on £100 of debt on each meter but some firms will take a lot more as they can afford to :p

If you use uswitch or similar be sure to do it through your topcashback or quidco account - I got £60 when I switched a year ago.
