Is the 980ti making the 980 obsolete?

The amount of people selling their gtx 980s currently at huge losses to get a ti is staggering:eek:

If you've got 400 for a gfx card you save up and buy a ti right ? The 980 at current pricing makes no sense to me.

Yup. Exactly how I feel. But that's technology for you. Something better always around the corner.

That being said, the 980 is hardly obsolete. Just not a great choice if buying new.

GPU's are cash cows fact, its only because people are prepared to by new tech all the time that the prices stay high. We only have ourselves to blame......... (including myself)

Maybe the 970 should drop and then the 980? At 299 the 980 would be a sweet deal 970 coming in at 199

Oh we can wish lol....

Maybe fury will rock the boat further

Would be great but it's not gonna happen. Can see the the 980 dropping further but NVIDIA are very reluctant to drop the 970s price because they sell like hot cakes at that price, even with the vram issues that not everyone is aware of.

Ideally the 970 will stay at "this week only" prices permanently because it is too close to the USD when you have the aftermarket cards at £300 and $350 in the US.

Yes to the op people were buying the high end 980 at enthusiast level prices. Some people where in denial while doing this, adamant that a card with a small chip is the big boy. The exact same thing with the 680 being overpriced then the 780 coming to destroy it for not much more.

The 980 was never worth the price when it first hit the shops. That is why sellers are taking a big hit now.

^^^^ NOT this :)
When the 980 came out it was faster than the 780 Ti for around the same price. Faster, more economical, more memory. Put yourself back in time and you'd agree the pricing wasn't bad. Hindsight is wonderful?
The reason they're being hammered now is probably a combination of a lot hitting the market second hand and of course newer/better options out there (Ti) and something from AMD coming soon. It's nothing to do with it not being worth the retail price x months ago, when back then the market was different IMO.
A more positive way of looking at it - second hand buyers can get a bit of a bargain if indeed the market is hammering the prices of them - buy now much cheaper than they were x months ago but of course there are faster cards out there now so won't be getting the latest and greatest.

Exactly, mid range GPU selling at high end prices due to a complete lack of competition. At least NVidia had the decency to sell GTX 970 at a price closer to it's real cost. The sad thing is that because AMD are still being useless NVidia have kept it on the expensive side and just priced 980Ti/Titan insanely high.

GTX980 is far cheaper to manufacturer than 780Ti though, smaller die, smaller memory bus, less cooling/power requirements. I suppose you could say NVidia are just reaping the rewards for R&D improvements but they have probably made insanely good profits out of it.

I think for £350 it is worth it and we arent far off that now.

They will be £350 or less before too long

That would be a £200 gap to the Ti which is a significant difference.

I'd buy a quiet 980 at £350 any day. But that ain't happening anytime soon. Especially with the way the AMD rebrands 300 series is looking. So I'm just waiting for the MSI Gaming 970 to be £270 (has happened a few times on OCUK in the past month or so), to order one of those. Best price to performance and it'll do well to tide me over till the die shrink and hopefully a proper improvement in price to performance, rather than the backstep AMD are taking with their rebrands 300 series.
