5870 1gb crossfire 5870 2gb

no. Same cards same spec.

The VRAM does not double up either. If you have say 2 x 2gb cards games dont have access to 4gb just 2gb.

I think you can run both together and be compatable but it will use the lower GB ram so will be CrossFire but only 1gb ram, they do NOT combine

I have 2x 5870s in CrossFire and is great, 1GB tho. Looking to upgrade soon so might look to sell my 5870s, just want a bit more VRAM in modern games

As mentioned, when running multiple GPU's in Crossfire (AMD/ATI) or SLI (NVIDIA), the VRAM doesn't combine, and if you run two GPU's with different amounts of VRAM, you will only be able to use however much VRAM the card with the least has. In your case 1GB.

Exactly what I was going to say.

I remember going from Crossfired 5870 (1GB's) to a single 7970 and they had the same maximum frame rates once the 7970 was a little overclocked, but much better minimum rates in games, was much smoother, and had 3GB. If you were thinking of upgrading, look at a 7970 (or 280X, which was the same GPU with a different name and a slight overclock) or above and you should be a happy bunny. :)
