This is all correct.

The bit you're missing is that the 8800GT was the next generation on from the 8800GTX, it's just they launched a non-flagship card first (in order to compete with the imminent HD3870) and decided not to change the series name. They did this after to add confusion, with the 8800GT becoming the 9800GT and the 8800GTS 512MB becoming the 9800GTX (just the 512MB GTS, the 320MB/640MB ones were older cards from the same series as the 8800GTX)

Then it was shrunk to 55nm,in the form 9800GTX+ in July 2008 which was rebranded as the GTS250 the next year. However at the time you get a 65NM or 55NM core for the 9800GTX+ and GTS250 which meant it could be a bit of a lottery. The GTS250 was then succeeded by the GTS450 in September 2010. AMD/ATI released the HD3870,HD4830/HD4850,HD4770 and HD5770 in that time period.

That isn't a straight rebrand.

Yes it is, when you overclock a card and change the name, that's a rebrand.

Now tell me that's the same as releasing a card that has the exact same identical core as it's predecessor 2 years prior? It's not nearly as ridiculous.
Answer is you can't, because it's plain stupid. Hence the need for FITH to throw in cards that wouldn't have even existed until 12 months later as an example of direct competition lol.

You need to read up on the G92 rebrands, the 8800GTS 512MB, 9800GTX, 9800GTX+, GTS250, GTS250 Green are all the same GPU rebranded with different clocks. The only notable change was that the 9800GTX+ was die shrunk (but it's still the exact same chip only smaller).

----------------------------------

Back on the topic of AMD specific rebrands and not rebrands in general, does anyone know if they will be using cherry picked chips for lower power usage or better clocking or whatnot?

GT > GTS

Circa one month gap with 128 stream processors over GT 112.

The 9800GTX is a convenient example but not entirely valid because NVIDIA were still on top at this time, the 4850 wasn't released till two months later.

"It's ok when NVIDIA does it" because logistically they're not 3 consecutive GPU launches behind their direct competition

You seem to poking a stick at me on the premise I care about the moral high ground.

The 390X makes zero sense. If you can make a valid argument as to why you think it's not, then I'll happily hear you out. Ludicrous conversation really.

If they want to have memory clock as 6000MHz (1500MHz), they MUST use better memory, as the memories on the 290/x, not all of them can run stably beyond 5000MHz (1250MHz).

I'm still hoping the the name change to the GPU would mean also some tweaking gone into the GPU itselfs as well to improve efficiency etc, ideally like how GTX480-> GTX570/GTX580 was...otherwise the change of name of Hawaii to Grenadier for the chip would be extremely stupid.

The 8800GT was rebranded to the 9800GT, the 8800GTS 512MB was rebranded to the 9800GTX.

The 8800GT was launched to counter the imminent HD3870, the 8800GTS 512 was launched to replace the 8800 Ultra.

No, I was correcting you on the premise you were arguing with Cat on something he was right about.

Maybe they're renaming it Grenada because they know it will be overwhelmed and conquered with ease (it's a joke not a dig at AMD).

I wander if people would be so accepting of a GTX 970 type situation had AMD done that.. I think probably... No no they wouldn't.

Ive said it before, and i'll say it again, if AMD pulled a 970 vram-gate, everyone would be returning their cards, but not with the extra cash for the next card up ,oh no, it would be for a Nvidia card.

9800GT was also available in TMSC 55nm, so a die shrink none the less. And drastically under a year between them.

Not sure how that compares to 2 years later for the exact same part.

Judging by the Sapphire specs there is no improvement on power draw. 375w and 2x 8 pin.

This is as much a reflection of AMD's current weakness and undesidability as it is of Nvidia 'fanboyism' or hypocritical loyalty.

When I was gaming at 1080p I changed from a 970 to a 980 with very little apprehension since AMD offered me nothing.

Max watt from all connectors does not equal max watt in actual use.
I told Dave Bauman that yesterday they need to fix their marketing before cards are out and he said,
You understand the notion of reference specifications vs AIB/partner board specifications, yes?

He dont get it.

Hi there! I'm looking for the thread 'Possible 390x specs and benchmarks'. I thought it was this one but I'm obviously mistaken
