Customs Charges

VAT
Customs Charg
Handling Charge

Bear in mind Im sure I read you actually pay VAT on the full amount includiung whatever you pay for shipping.

Asking to have it sent as a gift won't work as it's above the gift limit, which is only around £18.

RM's handling fee is indeed £12 but some couriers charge vastly more than this.
I think USPS hand off to RM once it hit's UK, might save you a bit.
Also if this is just the numbers fromt he checkout process on a site then drop them a mail advising you think the shipping charges are excessive and they might do somethign about it for you.

Be thankful you don't live in Turkey or Pakistan where you not only have to pay for import duty but also brokerage feed which can be extortionate. A few quid for handling charges and the use of the couriers deferment account is pretty reasonable.

I bought £140's worth from America (2 pairs) my customs charge as just shy of £40 which included the parcel force handling fee.

Or Brazil were import duty is more than what the goods are worth..

I still cant wrap my head around why we have to pay VAT, just makes stuff expensive compared to other places (murica and the like), just a way to get money out of us.

Anyway, yeah thats not right should only be like £40 maybe.

Import duty on shoes varies from 8%-17% depending on the construction and upper material (less depending on origin but this is irrelevant in this case).

VAT will be charged on top so you end up with shoe + duty + VAT = total cost

£160 is simply wrong.

People pay sales tax in virtually every country, including the USA with only relatively few tax-free exceptions such as Andorra etc.

If the product is for export then the tax is not charged - the tax is charged by the country of the person who is importing the item.

A small update/question related to customs.

The shoes arrived in the UK, and USPS scheduled a delivery for Tuesday. However, the shoes are still in customs. Does this mean they will definitely leave customs for delivery on Tuesday? Or is it just a lie.

USPS or UPS?
If it's USPS then it has been handed over to Parcelforce or Royal Mail who would only normally confirm a delivery date once the package has cleared customs and charges (if applied) have been paid.
If it is UPS they usually expedite the clearance and request payment of any charges on delivery to the recipient.

If you have a tracking number this should give a clearer idea of what status the shipment is at.

Its USPS. They say its scheduled to be delivered on Tuesday, but on the USPS and Parcel force tracking site, it's still listed as "awaiting customs clearance". It's not even at the stage for me to pay for the charges.

It's a lottery, you might get charged, you might not.

I once got charged £20 for a piece of £15 plastic. Yet never got charged for headphones valued at ~£300.

You takes your chances!

Strange. Well I'm expected to be charged, so if I do, I won't be upset. Would be great if it was delivered on tomorrow, but if it hasn't even cleared customs, I don't see how that's possible.

Wow, I only got charged £15 from which is great.... but then a £13.50 handling fee.

At first, I thought I'd be fine with the handling fee, but if it's almost the same as the customs charge... that's a bit annoying.
