Chris Evans to host top gear

Thing is, it will be a bit crap to start with. TG was a bit crap in the beginning, particularly if you compare with the stuff which came from about series 4 or 5 onwards. Takes a while to get the formula right and for everyone to settle into their roles.

Fair comment and any team that has worked together for 10 years will have their routine down pat (and likewise the production team will know what does and doesn't work).

Will be interesting to see what they do with the presenters; a lot of people naturally assume he will have two side-kicks but who knows.

Stuff like "SIARPC" I could easily see being retained, in fact you could argue that type of setup is right up Chris Evans' street (one-on-one chat with his showbiz guests, making a few gags - perhaps more of a natural fit that Clarkson).

I read Hammond and May have been offered the same three year contract but nothing has been released if they have agreed or not ? Not sure about Chris Evans he was ok in his day but I don't think TopGear will work with him. It was as much about the presenters bouncing off each other as the cars. I don't think Evans will fit with this.

TG is a bit of a poison challis imo

Poisoned fabric is never a good thing* :)

I'll reserve judgement until I see the program. Evans is nothing like Clarkson, and never will be, so they'll have to completely re-hash the program to survive on it's own merits rather than trying to emulate the previous series. I'm also a bit sad that Clarkson has gone. He may be an oaf, and a lot of their antics may have been predictable and scripted but there was something about the three characters that worked so well together and made for good entertainment.

Well that gives me my Sunday evenings back then.

My alarm clock lives across the room and he is the reason I have Radio 2 on as the alarm. I have to get up to switch him the **** off.

I don't get the love for TG in the format it was?

About the only part worth watching was the celebrity going round the test track all the rest of it was a trio of old duffers pretending to be 17 year old.

It just became dull and uninformative

Oh dear. I didn't like him on The Big Breakfast and that opinion only got reinforced over the years. On the plus side, if he's filming Top Gear, then I won't hear him quite so much on Radio 2 every morning.

Of course, we'd all be moaning no matter who they chose, but still... :(

Disappointing replacement. However, there's always the chance that if they do some really good car reviews and take it in a new direction, people may start to like it and prefer it to all the silly scripted stuff that bothered them in the past.

I dont think its the worst choice - depends more on who the other presenters are now really

im more intrested in how they are going to reinvent the thing overall - as a shoe in of new presenters and the same format would suck

Never been a fan of CE — TFI Friday revival last week was funny but not because of him.

I'm hoping the rumours of the real TG going to Netflix or Amazon Video are true, I'll watch that instead.

Evans seems a top bloke - no issues with him hosting whatsoever.

Top Gear though... it changed from being a car show, to a child's entertainment show, years ago; by that I mean that the whole "hammer fix problem" acting of Clarkson and the feigned shock by Hammond and May, just became too cringe-worthy.

Don't get me wrong, I have watched it, and I have enjoyed it - but it (IMO) was becoming less and less about the cars, and more about daft experiments - entertaining as some were.

Personally, I think Clarkson is quality, but he seemed to be getting more and more like Chris Moyles; a God complex or something.

Hammond - meh, he's ok, no issues - and ride bikes :D

May - absolute legend, really, this guy is the best bit of the show!

Back OT - I think Chris Evans is as good as any of the others for the role, and I'll happily watch the show if/when I catch it.

they should have let top gear die, the presenters made the show and the format work, and if they still wanted a motoring show, relaunch a new one. I have no real problem with Evans, but why call it top gear, give it a new name and a different format and style. make it unique in its own right, copying the old format just wont work and the dynamic wont be the same
