Chris Evans to host top gear

the other I expect..if its Evans own production company making it for the BBC...whats to stop him having clarkson in as a guest every now and then

Glad it's going to get a refresh, the show had become stale and the mock-drama was so cringeworthy.

Evans is a good presenter and is passionate about motors, good choice. Pair him up with Plato and I imagine some female representation (please god not Suzi Perry) and you got a good show.

Haha Evans, what a terrible choice

"Yeah, he's got loads of Ferrari's...must be a good choice right?"
"But sir, he's so boring..."
"But...Ferrari's. It's decided!"

Evans seems a top bloke - no issues with him hosting whatsoever.

Top Gear though... it changed from being a car show, to a child's entertainment show, years ago; by that I mean that the whole "hammer fix problem" acting of Clarkson and the feigned shock by Hammond and May, just became too cringe-worthy.

Don't get me wrong, I have watched it, and I have enjoyed it - but it (IMO) was becoming less and less about the cars, and more about daft experiments - entertaining as some were.

Personally, I think Clarkson is quality, but he seemed to be getting more and more like Chris Moyles; a God complex or something.

Hammond - meh, he's ok, no issues - and ride bikes :D

May - absolute legend, really, this guy is the best bit of the show!

Back OT - I think Chris Evans is as good as any of the others for the role, and I'll happily watch the show if/when I catch it.

Your first 2 paragraphs have summed it up for me - couldn't have said it better myself :)

I find Clarkson / Hammond tiresome and up themselves and wouldn't care for them being in/out of it at all.

May on the other hand, I really like and think he's the better of the 3.

I don't mind Chris Evans but this will tank. I really dislike the BBC - the clever thing to do would have been to wait for this to blow over and then have the three of them back.

But no, instead it must be milked for all it's worth, and it must be done immediately.

The BBC won't do that though, I honestly don't think they have the foresight. Rather than can it, they'll go in ever decreasing circles- drop ratings; drop budget; repeat. It will be in the same state as 90s TG and 5th Gear.

I think between them, AW and JC will come up with something very different but still a car entertainment show and will be all the better for it. I don't think they'll rush it though, especially given the competition (lack of) now. They'll get it right and it won't be what people are expecting IMO.

Why / What?

His Ferrari's have nothing to do with this, saying the above just makes you sound bitter.

He's a massive car nut, very successful in broadcasting and can be quite funny.

Yes he's not Clarkson, but then Clarkson will be doing his own thing so hardly a loss.

So the two best presenters Clarkson and May are Journalist's, car nut's and presenter's, probably in that order. Literate and witty.

As a replacement on the show, they propose a presenter and car nut, self confessed to be not very literate with two repetitive format shows already.

I can not see this being very good.

I'm not bitter at all lol I love his car collection and appreciate his passion for cars, but that's not reason enough to pick a guy for presenting the BBC's most popular show.

You summed it up when you said "he can be funny", you're right but so can Mo Mowlam if she cracks a witty one liner on 'Have I got News For You". 99% of the time he's just incredibly dull and comes across as irritating and a try hard. He's not suited to something like Top Gear. Unless of course they completely change the format of it but then no-one will watch it

Jason Plato was in the audience 'entourage' on the TFI Friday special so I reckon he's a good shout for a co-presenter.

Knowing the British Politically Correct Broadcasting Corporation, they'll need a female presenter as well. Jodie Kidd was mentioned previously, but she's top mates with Clarkson so may not do it. Suzi Perry was also in the audience on the TFI Friday special....

Worth noting that Evans is mates with all three former TG presenters (even went on holiday with May a few weeks ago). That won't hold her back if it's offered.

It certainly could be worse, he's probably the best choice for them to use but this doesn't matter at all. The show as we know it, will hopefully be resurrected elsewhere and this will be another format of the programme. If it's successful, remains to be seen but I suspect it will lose a lot of fans.

I've not seen anyone named who everyone agreed with. It's a no win deal, they simply have to make a choice and see how it goes. Evans knows how to make a successful TV series, he must be doing something right.
