Galax 970 HOF still a good buy?

Hi guys :)

Looking to pick up a 970 and was quite tempted by the Galax HOF variant as it's only £30 above the KFA2 model. With the 980Ti out and so forth, is £330 (this week deal) still a reasonable price to pay for this particular card or do you think it's overpriced?

I'd really appreciate some input. I game at 1080p and was hoping for a luxury card (for once) to tide me over for say, 18 months?

Hard to say, really. I bought a 970 around November last year and felt it was a good buy back then. Then the whole vram shenanigans came to light and quite a lot of games with bonkers requirements were released.

If I was buying a card now, I'd definitely think twice. It all depends on whether you're willing to turn down some settings in certain games.

It's still a good card but I don't know if it's likely to last 18 months of decent gaming. The thing is, there's not much to choose from at this particular point in time. From a price-performance standpoint, it's either the 970 or the 980Ti (or the 290x). AMD's new line of GPUs is just round the corner but most of them are confirmed to be rebrands.

The 970 is a good card for 1080P, but do you have to buy a premium model? There are 970s for £100 cheaper.

Otherwise, reviews of the new AMD cards should arrive this week, so it's probably worth waiting for a day or two, though there are unlikely to be many surprises.

To answer your question, OP. No, it's not a good buy. That doesn't mean you shouldn't get it though. How badly do you want it is the real question.

I'd assumed at it's price and design it would be the best clocker and less likely to suffer from coil whine etc. If that's not the case why is it the most expensive?

The rest of my setup happens to be white so I was also drawn to that. :P Paying 30 quid above the others for that is a price I'm willing to pay, it's just the overall situation about whether 970's still had any business being in the £300 category to begin with at the current time.

Like if they're worth their £300 then going a little bit more is fine but if the general consensus is that these cards should be in the £250 range then it's obviously another story.

I believe it is one of the best/better 970s, using a custom PCB (980 one?) and beefy VRMs etc - 8pack used this one I believe to clock at some point and said it was good

Anyone else, maybe somebody who owns the card can chip in? Feels like if you're not arguing about AMD v Nvidia around here then you'll struggle to get a few views in your thread...

No 970 is worth £330

Suggestions then for another card? Decent 1080p performance that is value for money? The HOF £30 off deal is gone now anyway so I can't get that. I don't want to get a bargain basement variant with coil whine and dubious after-market support.

Keep your eyes peeled for a cheap 780Ti if you don't mind used.

I am using a reference Zotac GTX 970 which came to 300 EUR after selling the "Pick your own Path" code, approximately £214 . At that price I would say that it is still worth it for sure.

Playing at 1440p as well, with BF4 being the most demanding (and giving me acceptable FPS with Ultra details and SweetFX). So a lot of grunt for the performance there and even though I am tempted to upgrade, it really would be a "just for the hell of it" thing than a need to upgrade. There are a handful of games out right now which will not give me acceptable frame-rates but everything else from the past years is perfectly playable for now and perfect to get through the Steam backlog with :D

I am in the same position, i have max £300 for a graphics card, what the hell do i do?

Wait to see what happens with the Nano / 300 series and price drops in a couple months? (i might stretch to nano if this is anywhere near £300)

Try grab a cheap 780 or try get a used 980 near 300?

Is the 970 likely change price much with the revamped amd 300 cards?

I'm in a terrible place!

Manchester isn't that bad ;)

I'm actually in the same position. I procrastinate so badly that Pascal will have been and gone by the time I decide what card to get. I sometimes wish my little MSI 670 PE would explode or something and force my hand.

This is really annoying. There just doesn't seem to be anything conclusive at the £300 mark that leaves you without feeling regret. I bought a 970 then just cancelled before they shipped it. Seems a 780Ti at the £150 mark would be ideal, but I'm not scouring the bay for one as that place is too dodgy.

I guess I'll have to wait for the AMD re-brands to drop and see if that triggers some seismic shifts in Nvidias prices. I doubt it will.

Ideally I'd like to get an MSI Gaming 970 for about £239.99. :P

Unless I'm totally mixed up the AMD rebrands are today, along with reviews. Probably at 1 or 2pm. With any luck there'll be a competitive product around the £300 mark.
