Decided not to wait for Skylake and am building a gaming pc based on gtx980ti and 4790k cpu.

Was going to use a Noctua NH-D15 cooler for a target of of 4.6-4.8ghz.

Question is what mobo do I go for? Was considering the Asus Maximus Hero VII but as that's been out a while now are there any better options?

The Hero is a cracking board but Haswell is all about the cpu not the board. Gone are the days that you need to spend a fortune on a board to get a decent overclock. Chances are that the cpu will clock exactly the same in a cheap board as a expensive one and just like me, you will end up with a board that has a zillion options in the bios that will never get used. The Asus Z97 Pro Gamer is £62 cheaper and will do 99% of what the Hero can do.

Pro gamer is also better suited for sli than any of the ROG boards, be it Z87/97. If you decide to add another gpu. Two slot gap between the pcie slots vs one slot on hero, formula etc.

Thanks fellas, bought the Maximus hero VII, it was only £35 more than the pro gamer... Though the real reason was because the z97 Pro Gamer wasn't in stock!

Am looking at my bundle of bits contemplating the layout and bios etc... Have yet to even connect the cpu to it!

You can update the bios using ubs flashback without the cpu inserted as well. That's a brilliant feature and should be on all boards.

I went Ranger and to be honest I regret that as it was a cost cutting decision, I should have gone water cooled mobo and not worried about the unused features, my over lock will ever be more .5ghz or so but I like the look of a water cooled rig.

How about your favourite MSI boards? :D :p

I am sure they would be able to screw that method up as well. :D:p:D

Going for a more expensive board is highly unlikley to get a better overclock unless using extreme voltage or LN2. It's all about the cpu not the motherboard now. My 4670k does the same overclock, with the same settings in a Gigabyte B85M-D3H as it does in my Hero.
