Exclusive: AMD considering to spin off GPU business

I was thinking the same, why sell off the good side of the business to focus on the faultering side?

They got a whack of tech in development, you don't write of Xmil of development/console sales and depend on cpus that no one really wants.:p

They are only 1 arch away from a killer product, when that arch arrives is anyones guess though.

They need to adapt and identify miniturisation on other target areas as PC's will fade into obscurity in the long term.

Could be wrong but got a feeling Lisa will turn it around, she looks as if she'll just uzi the deadwood and identify and push the real talent.

John Byrne looked as if he was more interested in sounding cool than driving the company onwards-but in saying that if he just talked with his native Fergie Park banter he wouldn't have got anywhere.:D

Sometimes spinning off is a precursor to one part of the business being sold. Take TSB as an example. It can also be because one part of the company is going to die so break it free now so doesn't damage future profits of the main group. The GPU or the CPU side might find suitable buyers as standalone companies but possibly not as a whole. As an example, Intel would probably have no desire for the CPU side of AMD but the GPU business?. Who knows.

Lack of passion may be, but they tends to excel at everything that they do...they hold their ground well, if not do better against other competitions that's been long in the industries.

I remember back in the late 90's Samsung had little brand name power, they had good products but were in a lot of trouble. They even sold a lot of their hifi and electrical goods to Goodmans Industries and allowed Goodmans to rebadge them as Goodmans products.

Yea but late 90s is like 16~20 years ago, and Apple almost bankrupted back then as well (good thing they didn't, or none of us would have a smartphone or tablet to starr down at all day now :D)

I read this as it was something that was considered as a option. So lisa was exploring options. And AMD would handle the CPU side of things whilst the GPU would be split off into ATi once again to handle the GPU side of things. Meaning they are still owned by AMD but essentially two different companies. It was something that was considered and i really don't think it will be put into action as the GPU side is what has really kept them afloat. Lets be honest!

Exactly one could almost think that all these clickbait AMD stories are somehow related to the timing AMD's upcoming GPU launch in a few days. Clickbait sites wanting as many web hits as possible? No it can't be that lol.

Alleged sources. It could be true or just clickbait. The timing OFC is pretty awesome too.

^^

Lisa Su probably not happy with Zen performance and wanted AMD to return to old root to focus CPU business alone so they would create CPU killer like Athlon did in old day to break Intel dominance.
I been building PC's for 18 year's and out all them years AMD has only ever made a single cpu range (The Athlons) that could match or beat the intel CPU's at the time

What makes Lisa Su think AMD can even build a CPU that can match or beat intel CPU's of today ? ;)

Probably a little late to consider this move but if the GPU arm of the business was run like the ATi of old it would be a good move. They could then hire some developers for the drivers... :D
If I remember right, The ATI openGL drivers back in my ATI 9800pro AIW days were terrible

I think they will be close to parity on the node process that Zen is built on. In the past Intel have always had a big advantage here. This should give them a leg up straight away. They hired some good people a few years back which has all lead to Zen. On the Apu side they have always had the Gpu power advantage by a large margin. If they can get the Cpu power anywhere close to Intel they should be onto a winner. Whether it's enough remains to be seen but it can't get much worse than it is now.

I can't see AMD splitting the company as Apu's are the future in gaming i would have thought.

You've missed off a '0'. Easy mistake to make.

Haha.

Anybody noticed the massive increase in FUD surrounding AMD lately? Could it be anything to do with a new high end GPU range launching soon..

Not that I am suggesting that websites might be trying to generate web hits while AMD is popular because of incoming launch.. No wait that is exactly what I am saying.

AMD has the world leading tech for sure.
What they failed to do is two things, management and Marketing.

Its no use if your the best in the world if the customer cant understand that due to flawed marketing which is a must needed thing to get going for AMD.
Lisa Su understands that and why she is moving stones.

What they need and have always needed are a management team who understand the computer business not a bunch of accountants and hanger on types. It would be a good option for the GPU side to be independent again.

I think AMD seriously need to look at their image.

You can not help what you look like but you can do something about how you dress.

For me this was a bit of a shocker for a product launch as I have seen better dressed bricklayers.

Casual is ok but something has gone seriously wrong here.
