Hey guys im looking to overclock my gaming rig but dont know where to start or if to start atall heres my specs

AMD Bulldozer fx 8320 3.50ghz
Asus M5a99x evo r2.0
Kingston hyperx genesis 2x 4gb
Corsair GS600 powersupply
coolermaster hyper 412s cpu cooler
HIS HD 7950 gpu
Coolermaster Half 912 case with standard fans

looking to get the most out of it for playing arma 3 any ideas? is it worth trying to overclock or should i upgrade?

thanks :)

Try overclocking it as you have a decent board for it, if your still not happy then upgrade it.

You should be able to get that cpu up to 4.6GHz quite easily with your cpu cooler, although I don't think that translates much into an increase in gaming performance. Most games shouldn't be cpu limited for you anyway if you're using a 7950.

Overclock it to see what you can stable along with keeping safe temps and see if it affects the performance of your game.

If it doesn't? Upgrade. If it does increase performance and you're happy with it? Don't upgrade just yet :)

I have squeezed more life out of my 8350 by overclocking to a safe limit that doesn't affect temps much and I noticed a massive performance increase in gtav(maybe a slight bottleneck I got rid of) but if it wouldn't have done anything I might have looked into upgrading sooner than I have planned

Brilliant, so now the question is how do i overclock? ive never done it before so would love 1 of you guys to let me know a few tricks and what to use to over clock and really how to overclock completely :P

I used to have the same motherboard as you but never overclocked on it so I'm not sure of the settings but I'm sure most of its the same over all boards. I will try and reply with a rough guide later on when I'm home but I would recommend heading over to the fx overclocking thread on here and asking as I'm sure someone has your board and could offer more insight.

Main things I would recommend is:

*focus on vcore and temperatures
*try and stay on stock vcore as much as the board will allow you and try not to deviate too much
*try to overclock with multiplier instead of fsb
*small changes at a time will provide better results and a safer overclock

I managed 4.6ghz on my fx8350 on stock vcore with minimal temperature changes by making little changes, testing and repeat until I dropped a core then rolled back to working settings.

put cpu multi to x22.5 for 4.5ghz with 1.35 volts test is stable with ibt at very high 20 runs make sure the reading say e-002 at the rear or your not 100% stable, if stable try lowering the volts down one and test if stable again

in your bios turn off apm and turbo,

ok, but can u link the thread for me please? im having trouble finding it :\

Here you go bud

Ok FX63007850 what programs do i use for this?

Make the changes in the bios and I think most people would recommend a stress test using a program called Prime95. :)

General help thread for temp monitoring etc:

You adjust the multiplier and vcore to overclock it. I cant remember the exact names on Asus/AMD as its been a while.
Then use a program such as HWmonitor (thats what I use) to monitor your CPU temp. If I remember correctly the max temp is 65 for your CPU, but best check!
Then use a program such as Prime95 to test your highest temp, I normally run it for about 2 minutes, just to give me an idea.
Then use your computer normally eg gaming, browsing and whatever else you use your computer for to test stability.

Just google Asus M5a99x evo r2.0 overclocking, there is even a you tube video right near the top
