Hi guys,

I am using afterburner for fan control on my graphics card so was wondering what it's like to use it for overclocking?

Is it worth overclocking this graphics card?

Thanks :)

always worth it :), and afterburner is a good OC utility so go for it.

It's the Sapphire Tri-X.

Great, same card I have.

Don't bother with memory overclocking (for now at least) since it offers a typically small gain compared to core clocking.

What I would suggest is downloading the unigine heaven benchmark and increase your core clock by 10mhz at a time, running heaven for a full loop at a time (I suggest making note of the benchmark score at stock for good feels later). When you get to a point where the benchmark either starts to give you visual artifacts (coloured squares, bad hitching or even lock ups or crashes) you have gone slightly past your stable overclock at stock volts.

You now have two options. You can either back it off a bit until the artifacts disappear, and continue further stability testing by playing a few demanding games for a while and looking out for artifacts. Or, and I suggest doing this if you want to get the most out of your card, you can add a bit of extra core voltage (0.01V each time) to resolve the instability the extra core speed has caused. Rinse and repeat until a) temps start peaking at 80C or more after a couple loops in heaven, or b) you are adding more than 0.2V to the card. While it's safe to go higher in some cases, if you are new to overclocking I would suggest keeping the overvoltage below that to ensure you don't reduce the lifespan of your gpu. You'll find a point where you have to add significantly more voltage for increasingly small gains, and I tend to back my overclock off to just before that point for my 24/7 clocks.

The tri x has a very capable cooler so if your chip is good, you should do well. Let us know how you're getting on :)

Sapphire Trixx overclocking utility.I have owned a few r9 290x cards and all of them could overclock to 1200/1600 with maxed voltage in Sapphire Trixx.
Afterburner-0.100Mv
Trixx-0.200Mv

I always got better results from afterburner. Higher overclocks on trixx always result in lower results.

U can make afterburner got to +300mva if u add the target line text. Theres a post in these and overclock.net forums on how to do it.
