Hey,

I'm looking at purchasing a car any time between now and September really. I'm 24, 3 years NCB.

Reason for the car is because I'm moving with my partner to Oxfordshire (new job, new flat), but I'll be in my final year at uni here in Southampton so will need to commute a couple times a week, as well as for general use and trips around the country.

My partner wants to learn to drive too, so something that can be easily insured is a must for that.

Budget around £1500 for the car, and £500 for insurance for myself. Can go higher if it's worth it though.

I'm thinking Focus/Fiesta/Civic/Mazda 3?

Sold my sisters Mazda3 a few years ago for about that, it was a 2004 bought at 5 years old and it was frankly crap. The awful interior probably doesn't matter at this pricepoint but the rust that developed was unbelievable. Although it's technically Focus based the Focus itself felt like a MUCH better car.

Fiesta 1.25 (think they've put that engine in every marque so far).

Revs quite nicely and good on fuel, won't go wrong is the main thing as when you're young funding a car is enough to worry about without having major unplanned expense.

Most of the Ford's at the price point are starting.to.go the same way unfortunately

My 03 Focus has no signs of rust yet. None I can see or has been mentioned in services or MOT's

As for getting a Fiesta..

For someone learning to drive you can expect to pay £300-£500 for insurance on a provisional licence and expect it to raise to £1500+ once she passes her test as fiestas are popular for first time drivers.

Decided to buy it earlier than planned for the end of this week, rather than making my mother drive down to help me move.

Bought this today: http://www2.autotrader.co.uk/classi...l=cars&sort=default&page=9&radius=5&logcode=p

Tax and insurance was around £500 on top. Bodywork has it's fair share of scratches and bumps, but it's in otherwise good condition. New MOT etc etc. Gonna give it a clean tomorrow, but it's already pretty tidy otherwise. Guy I bought it from sold out of his home garage... in which there was a DB9 sitting behind a Civic and a Seat Leon.

wait up, OP, you say your travelling around the country ? I guess your doing more than 15,000 miles a year ? then perhaps a diesel ?
