I need to grow up for a while and nominate a reasonable family car. I'm not sure if it's because of Vauxhall popularity in my area but Insignias are a dime a dozen up here and you can get a good one with a budget of £7000-8500. Say what you will, but the are well equipped and a lot of car for the money.

Question is, the trim levels. Does anyone know the differences between...

  • CDTI SRI
  • VX Line
  • Elite

The VX line and Elite appear to be most well equipped and somehow better looking. Clearly the VX line must be the sports version, if there can be such a thing on a diesel :p Though does the Elite then out do the VX line with the same as and better?

Simple : don't buy one get a mondeo :D

I'm not sure the Mondeo is THAT much better, the Insignia isn't a bad car. It's getting on a bit now but this isn't an issue in the £8k bracket. It's at least as modern if not more so than the equivalent Mondeo.

It's not like the Vectra which was rubbish enough that you just bought a Mondeo because it wasn't a Vectra.

This won't be much use unfortunately, he is looking at 4-6 year old cars I would imagine and the specifications will have changed dramatically in that time.

Can't imagine it's changed too much, should still give an idea of what the trim level is aimed at.

The Elite is the top of the range in terms of equipment, but doesn't come with the "sporty" bits like trim or suspension. You do get heated full leather seats and fake wood trim though.

VX Line is the SRi plus VXR bodykit and big wheels.

SRi gets sports trim and suspension, but the rest of the spec is pretty basic.

It seems with the Insignia you can't have sporty and high spec (unless you go for the VXR) - you have to choose one or the other.

Thanks guys.

The VX line is the one for me then, some of the 'normal' Insignias don't look as nice, with their doughnut wheels.

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that the cars with skirts and slightly lower suspension will be a better place to be, spec would win for me every time (so long as the fake wood isn't too disgusting).

I quite like insignias, particularly the later facelifted cars.

I've got the elite as I wanted all the goodies and the auto xenon lights that move whilst going round corners. The fake wood is no where near as bad as it looks on pictures. The flash seems to make it look completely different.

I dropped on and got one with the sport button package which stiffens the whole car up. Great for country lane driving.

I've bought the VX-Line kit to get fitted at a later date to add the skirts, so apart from not having the factory 15mm drop that the SRI has I've got all the goodies that the insignia range has.

I changed from the 19" speedlines to 19" pentas to make it look abit sporter.
