Woman eats cereal while driving her Land Rover

I never said you personally are the scourge of the road, I'm sorry if I came across that way... I was just trying to get across my point that an awful lot of cyclists I encounter pull dangerous maneuvers and don't take enough care. I got the impression that you disagreed with my statement that there are an awful lot of bad cyclists entirely. I did also say that there are some good cyclists, and I'm sure you may be one of those. But at least where I am, there don't seem to be as many competent cyclists as there are incompetent ones. :(

I wasn't in a particularly good mood earlier when I made some of these posts. Some of them could have been worded more gently and constructively. :)

Look, the cyclist that sparked this thread off is militant and gives the rest of us a bad name; I wouldn't dream of defending him. But for his actions and those of others that you see just remember there are many more who share the road happily and just try to enjoy their sport.

So chatting to a passenger is dangerous ?

I remember a study on this,
the passenger picks up cues from the surroundings and so knows when to shut up, a person on the other end of the a phone doesn't and so chatters on regardless.
Like I wouldn't continue to talk while someone was coming down a slip road because they need to concentrate.

Figures ! :)

Incorrect.

Cyclists should cycle where it is safest. 60cm is the recommended minimum distance from the kerb in the UK in order to avoid metal drains and detritus. It also means cyclists still have room to move left should they approach a hazard (such as a pot hole) and be unable to move right for any reason, such as traffic overtaking.

In some situations the safest place to be is the centre of the lane. This could be to prevent traffic from overtaking if you deem there it be insufficient room for them to do it safely. If you are going round a parked car or other obstacle then it's recommended you leave 1m in case anyone opens a door or steps out. If there are parked vehicles with spaces between then maintaining a consistent position is much safer than weaving in and out.

Most drivers simply don't know what cyclist are taught to do.

Yeh, it's important drivers realise (I drive and cycle) why cyclists do certain things.

Often cycle lanes are potholed, have drain covers, broken glass and other rubbish in them, not to mention parked cars.

The safest thing for a cyclist to do is pull right into the centre of the lane well in advance of a parked car or approaching a traffic island. Drivers may see this as rude but it's essential for safety.

Drivers often don't allow room at pinch points, so as a cyclist you need to be assertive and take the space (known as primary position) in advance before you end up hitting the back of a parked car, or get squashed between a parked car and car that's double overtaking.

This is the kind of line I take, 99% of drivers don't seem to mind, but you get the odd one who beeps/shouts, which I just have to put up with, it's better than cycling in the gutter then suddenly pulling out to pass a parked vehicle, which is far more dangerous as you may not have even registered as a road user to a car approaching from behind, especially if they are eating their rice crispies.

My friends, much to my frustration seem to do the complete opposite, and seem to distract me more when I'm manoeuvring.

One mate in particular (he's stopped doing this after I tore shreds off him on one occasion) had a habit of checking whether junctions were clear for me, sticking his head right where I'm trying to look left, and announcing 'clear on this side!'.

To which I'd retort "move your ******* head you ******* ****!!"

He got the message that I like to be able to see myself after a while!

I am sure that the reason a lot of people, myself included, don't give cyclists room / time of day because most of the ones we come across are right muppets who think they are God on our roads and can do or say anything they want! Probably a minority i know but they give the rest a bad name! Much like any road user

in 2years I've had 1 real issue with a motorist.

he ended up on his arse when he swerved in front of me , screeched to a halt and tried to start a fight because I didn't let him past on a narrow road where I was doing the speed limit anyway 20mph.

before you think you are god in your 2 ton metal armour you might want to think about how much fitter and stronger that cyclist is likely to be than you.

or do you plan to fail to stop at the scene of an accident when you take one off because "don't give cyclists room / time of day"

I often wonder if I wasn't 6"4 with broad shoulders would I encounter more idiots like koolpc when I'm out cycling.

99% of vehicles have no issues sharing the road with me and I get back the same respect I give for the most part

It's arknor, probably never happened :p

Arknor is an alpha male.
Arknor goes for a daily walk late at night around the city centre and through the park back home sometimes as late as 3am
When people see Arknor at these times they often cross over the street to avoid him or say "hello" as if out of fear they are trying to humanise themselves and provoke some empathy in an attempt to not get robbed or beat up by me.

Arknor may post a lot of crap, he may be autistic, But he is not a scared little boy inside a mans body until you attempt to converse with him and people realise it's not a socially confident adult they thought he was.

I seem to be quite an imposing figure from appearances but I'm generally harmless and wouldn't cause trouble with anyone.
If someone wants to start trouble with me however I am quite capable of defending my self and do not fear physical or verbal confrontation
