Ever get bashed by people for being 'techy'?

It's infinitely more acceptable nowadays to be techy. Try being into computers back in the early 80s.

Step Mother, Father, Step Brother/Sister pretty much everyone family at the moment.
Even my Nan called me 'weird minded'.

Tried to have a discussion, but always results in a heated argument.

And from now, you don't. Tell them to jog on and "find a geek they haven't managed to **** off."
Thanks, will certainly start doing that!

Ah... I get called a nerd and a geek by my fellow IT colleagues lol...

A few people have tired to use my services outside work, I don't mind family and close friends.. but I refuse anyone else and especially friends of friends/family...

the simple response I give them is "you can't afford me"

Jealousy because you have a passion/interest in something and they're fed up with their miserable monotonous lives ;)

No, it's not actually jealousy. Claiming this sort of stuff is always down to jealousy is worse than the actual thing in the first place.

Some people are just fools that moan about people having interests that are different.

I must be lucky, as I don't get any grief. Most of my friends are the same way inclined with regards to tech, at least to some degree anyway. My mum's always been fine with my fascination with technology, and encouraged it.

My girlfriend enjoys games a lot, she's not so much in to the hardware but I don't get any grief from her about the hardware either.

Something I've found is that friends/family expect you to fix their stuff for free. Something that doesn't happen with my friends who are mechanics and are asked to fix cars.

It might just be me of course and my over generous nature and I don't ask for any money but it's the kind of thing I would offer money for if the boot were on the other foot regardless of whether they asked.

A few months ago a bloke at work who I only see occasionally asked me if I could look at his laptop which was riddled with viruses. So he brought it in and I took it home, formatted it, re-installed Windows, installed all the drivers, updates and programs he had before which took my evening up.

I told him what I'd done whilst handing it back to him and he just said "thanks for that" and walked off. I'm sure if I'd have gone round and done a service on his car he wouldn't think of expecting me to do it for nothing.

Seems like the OP needs new friends? I don't care what people think, my money, I do with it as I see fit. Most of the people who've ever had a quip at me don't do very well for themselves which just makes me laugh.

Yeah, could do with some of those, problem is I go out, but am not a fan of drinking or anything like that. Messaged a couple of old friends the other week, but they actually ignored me, which hurt a little to say the least.
Was kind of bullied through school, and left with a number of friends I could fit on one hand, one by one have moved away, and moved on.

Don't like to seem such a downer, or look hard done by, just for some reason this weekend has really tipped me!

Hi all,

Thought I would come here to vent a little, and ask if you guys constantly get bashed by people and family members for being techy?

Since I was in school, I have always been a hardware fan so isn't something new at all.

This weekend has been exceptionally awful, worse than recent ones and every single time I get told that I shouldn't be buying watercooling stuff, shouldn't play games, shouldn't well get anything techy.

I mean, I cannot see the issue the family has with this.
I have always took it on the chin, but now every single day being told the same stuff, even on the phone is really starting to grind on me.

I'm full time employed, always trying my very best, and progressing forward when i'm at work, but when I get home it appears to be all wrong to wind down on the PC, or upgrade some bits for an hour or two. The thing which gets me, it isn't everyday either! maybe two to three times a week, including weekends!

Do any of you guys have/had this issue, and how did you deal with it?

Right now, I really want to hurt them back, but to be fair it isn't me and want to be the better person about it.

Yet when the spent 100 quid on candy crush or their laptop has malware from clicking yes to "do you want sex with hot miles tonight" or its general just slow from never unchecking the "would you like to install X tool bar with your Z instalation" you'll be the first they ring.

Meetup.Com?

my response is normally "wait till facebook, skype or internet stops working, who you gunna call? ;)"

then again I don't get that at all, I used to get the usual "why are you wasting money the old one is working anyway" dada at home but I moved out and all that ended.

How old are you? Just go out and do things you like, you'll soon have a new circle of friends.

I get my dad who doesn't live with me moaning about it because I should be spending it on my car or something. Yet he's gone through 4 GPU's in the past month

I don't ever get grief for it, I do however constantly get asked for things like 'my sound isn't working, can you have a look?' or 'it's going really slow, can you have a look?'

I don't mind helping, but it can consume a lot of time! :(

I've found that as the internet and tech has slowly taken over everyone's lives the mickey taking at being a "geek" has reduced significantly. Not because everyone's more geeky but because they know (or rather think) a geek could do a lot of damage to them.

I work with a lot of manual workers with very little tech knowledge and after playing a few pranks like spoofing their e-mail address so I can send messages to office middle-aged bint expressing their secret love, and changing their wallpapers (which are locked by IT so they can't change it back) for a pic of a gay model, I've built a reputation in their minds of someone that can 'control technology' as if I'm some kind of X-Men character.

If they start to take the mick about me being into tech and call me a nerd I just say something like "Yeah I am a geek, which means I can hack your Facebook account" and the apology and "I was only joking" reply comes back pretty quickly. Of course in reality I wouldn't be able to hack them but in their mind I could :D

OP, I reckon if you think hard enough there is a pastime that exists which even you find strange and ridicule worthy. This is the way of the world, so best just to learn how to deal with haters while you're still at a forgiving age.

When you eventually move out to your own place, your family will suddenly notice the lack of live-in tech support. Charge them a few quid and put it towards your next graphics card purchase. Tell them they can charge you when you're in need of advice about reality TV and local football issues, as it's only fair.
