Finally got enough money to purchase one of these.
You might call me mad, but I just love the look of them
Can anyone here give me some tips of what to look for when I'm viewing

You need more advice and guidance than a more generic forum like this can offer - have a look on some of the more classic orientated forums because I'd suggest you speak to owners of these first.

I actually thought I would ask here because of you fox, as I know your clued up with bmw, you was the one that converted me from my audi a4 to the 325 coupe that I have now, just now feels it's time for some 3.5L straight six goodness.
I just love the look of the 80s bmws aswell
For the record my 325 makes me smile every time I drive it, it's only a 2.5 but it still gets a shift on if you keeps the revs up

Thanks anyway, a 335i coupe did temp me, but I still need to scratch the e28 itch, plus it's an investment aswell

You'll get an ace one for that :) I'd try and find one with a sensible (i.e. sub-100k mileage), just because it's infinitely easier to sell. Plus little things like the door hinges, ignition barrel, etc, won't be worn to hell (although it depends on how the mileage was accumulated).

I'd go for a manual one as well, if you can.

Front suspension is rubbishy and inadequate.
The bar that goes across the bulkhead to convert from LHD can wear or get work bushes which makes brake pedal mushy/sloppy/stiff/stuck on.
Banjo bolts on camshaft spray-bars may become loose leading to oil starvation.
Brakes are powered by power steering fluid and a nitrogen-filled accumulator (bomb) that may need replacing.
Sills can rust badly around jacking points.

Want manual for sure, there is a nice one on auction site, that is been converted to m5 spec, it's a dark grey one, £7750 hmm tempting but so far away, but I bet it's quite a car
Suspension is easy to change, Infact most stuff is, parts availiblity would be the problem

Classical cars have their own soul and are some how more enjoyable to drive.

Not much in the way of advice again but I spotted one at a hand car wash yesterday, had a look and it was an 85 C plate 528i SE, a mere 255k under its wheels!

Had a chat with the owner - I often do this with such cars when I come across them - In its life it had had two front wings due to rust but that was it, looked lovely!
The guy who had it had owned it for the last 20 years, his daily driver is an e60 545i he said, but he said he piled miles on the e28 because it had a "spirit" the later cars lack.
First thing he said when I started asking about it was "no! It's not for sale!" - he gets approached about selling it often he said.

This was a manual, he'd had it converted from auto after an MOT tester killed the box by holding it on the brakes whilst revving it during the emission test a few years back!

Completely standard, the cloth interior was in remarkable condition, despite its miles, I imagine it would get a good price were he to sell it, no photo alas, battery was flat. :/

That black one is mint, that's sort of what I want.
Yeah the older e28 has much more soul in my opinion
