non EU migrants to be sent home if not earning £35k after 6 years. hmm what about salary caps

The main thing that makes me angry about this story is that fully qualified nurses get paid as little as £28k a year

They can't even deport the illegal migrants with much success, surely that should take priority over deporting legal migrants even if they aren't earning £35k.

£35k is ridiculous anyway, pretty sure neither of my parents (postman and nurse) earn close to that and both are British nationals, why should migrants have to hit that target? Stating a blanket figure doesn't take into account regional differences in wages / living costs.

I can see what the aim of this measure is, and it is an aim that needs addressing but this is the wrong way of going about it.

Interesting number....perhaps someone has done some Excel spreadsheets and thinks they've found the point at which someone becomes a net contributor to the economy.

So Nurses on this wage are insignificant to the economy. the NHS has got to be one of the if not the biggest employers in the country.

It was just speculation as to where this figure comes from.

I wouldn't surprise me at all if that was more or less the figure where the average person becomes a net contributor (income and other taxes less average public services/benefits usage)

They can't even deport terrorists, so there's no chance of deporting a law abiding, tax paying and productive migrant just because they have a semi-skilled occupation that doesn't pay that much.

What percentage of the country is on 35k or more?

seems a bit high

Police Officer
Despite doing a risky job, police officers come in below the national average with a wage of £24,681.

Teacher
It’s an incredibly tough job, but luckily for the rest of us some plucky people are prepared to do it and be paid a not too shabby average wage of £33,786.

National average is only 27k and that's likely inflated a bit by high earners ?

Good, we should have the same system as the US, Canada Australia etc.
A nice point system.

Also a nice point system in schools and university would go nicely with it, i.e. you get more ema for qualifications that the country needs instead of media studies.

What amazes me is why we don't spend more money training nurses in this country.

Try and get young people interested, The number of people that look down on me for being a skilled craftsmen that didn't go to uni is ridiculous, so I can only imagine what people think of nurses.

End of the day we need to get rid of the stigma of service careers. not everyone can be lawyers or footballers. maybe bring tax credits or reductions for much needed careers.

Another step closer to destroying the NHS, without foreign workers the NHS will crumble. Lets hope they can declare Nursing a occupation with staff shortages.

This has also been back dated to 2011 I think. Quite unfair as those Nurses who the NHS has recruited from abroad would not have known of this.
As vast majority of nurses are well below that figure they're kind of screwed over unless an exception is made.

Unless recruitment goes up then there will be a shortfall for however many years that will have to be filled by agency Nurses which charge a lot more per hour than fulltimers.

Bit of a dogs ear of two government departments not talking to eachother enough.
