Went through a camera van earlier and was wondering if they got me

40 limit, speedo showing around 48-50 which I know is a true 45-47 (checked with GPS) so borderline on the normal 46 cut off

question more surrounds how they are operated

the rear van door was open but there was a bloke in the van drivers seat

do they operate them from the drivers seat? are there more than 1 person operating?

40 mins later it was still there, bloke in drivers seat with doors closed

They don't operate them from the drivers seat. Apparently there can sometimes be two people in the van, so it's not impossible that there was someone operating the camera, but I've only ever seen them with one person.

:) I think if I manage Friday I will be ok, they usually arrive in about 48hrs round

It really is a dangerous road that needs people clamping down on what with it being a fully barriered dual carriageway and all that

It's really hard to tell, I know one road that they operate on that leads into a 50mp from a 30mph and they only stop people if they are doing at least 45 leading up...

the ACPO guidelines are a minimum of 46 in a 40, they may set it higher but then they would lose revenue

The key word is "guidelines", the next section under the speed table in the ACPO guidelines goes on to say "these guidelines do not and cannot replace discretion" IIRC.

generally they will not go lower than the guidelines but by going higher they are losing money

Had a similar incident about 4 weeks back, accelerating out of a 40 (but before the limit ended - professional driver eh?!?) in my car, saw the van but was positioned with a van in front obscuring me, I kept my speed but stayed lined up with the van in front as such, think it's safe now to say I got away with it.

I've not speeded through that section (A34, Tittensor, Staffs) since, so, from a safety point of view the van did its job although I'm sure they are more about revenue generation than safety tbh.

I thought I'd been busted by a camera van once on one of the local roads here leading to the A3. It was only when I got closer to it I saw the door on the back of the van was shut but I didn't think much of it at the time. The van was there again the next day with the little door open so either the van had just got there the previous day, or my speed was just about ok.

And in most cases no doubt they are all about revenue generation. Personally I've got no problem with the vans appearing in accident prone areas or where people consistently take the mick but only a couple of weeks ago I saw a van on a back road just on the outside of Basingstoke. The road is a 60 limit which drops to 30 for a little village and the van was positioned so it would just catch those people who didn't slow down to 30 before the sign. The same road eventually opens back up to a 60 again a few hundred yards after the village and the next day I saw another van positioned just by the NSL signs, obviously to catch people who floor it early.

Now on the one hand, speeding is still speeding so arguably people getting busted there deserve all they get what with it being a 30 limit, but on the other hand, there have been no accidents there that I'm aware of and I haven't seen the vans since. That said, I always do 30 in a 30 zone anyway so it didn't affect me and some would argue I'm 'moaning' about nothing.
