i5-2500K overclock attempt!?!?

Hi guys,

I am a complete noob when it comes to overclocking but just followed one of the guides on a well known website.

Would you guys be able to tell me if everything looks OK/safe from the pictures? The temperatures were only showing about 30 minutes of idle and a small amount of GTA 5 running.

Looks good to me! Is it really stable at 4.5GHz with 1.3V? :eek:

Thats a very good chip you have there if so! Mine needed 1.36V for that sort of clock!

You should be pleased as punch with that. :)
 
Really? I set the voltage to 1.28 in the BIOS as well but it seems to be using more, is this normal?

Also I am running Intel Burn Test on standard, what's the safe temperature for this?

You still have plenty of headroom in Vcore and temps. I think my 2500k did 4.7GHz on 1.35v. My 2600k is on 4.6GHz at about the same voltage I believe.
 
So am I increasing the Vcore by 0.1 to 1.38v? I'm a bit confused about the different readings between the BIOS and HWMonitor.

Also my computer just froze again on the desktop :(
 
Running IBT at Maximum is making the CPU hit 93 degrees. Think it's time to give up lol.
Don't use IBT (just puts unrealistic heat into the CPU) use RealBench to test for stability. You didn't say what cooler you have but definitely keep temps preferably in the low 80's at most. General rule of thumb for 2500k see what the most your CPU can do up to 1.4v and temps no higher than ~80c

As long as there isn't any thermal throttling keep going, I think the TJmax for sandy is 95c though.

Though you don't want to get anywhere near 95c in normal usage when overclocking. ;) My previous Sandybridge CPU's would crash once I reached ~85c. As soon as I kept them <80c I could find the maximum of the chip without heat related issues.
 
Thanks guys so are the voltage readings in HWMonitor realistic? Or do I just keep going by the BIOS setting?

With the settings above how would I keep the temperature down and stop it from freezing?
 
I use CPU-Z personally though the only accurate way is to use a multimeter. Though both HWMonitor and CPU-Z are good enough for our purposes.

Best way to keep temperatures down is to have a good heatsink (Noctua D14/D15), and a couple of case fans in push and pull config. Freezing is the very least of your concerns. ;)
 
Looks good, remember they are designed to run just under tj max Hense why they won't throttle until then but it can cause problems having them too high. Depends how far you want to go ;).

I remember my old 3770k did 4.5ghz on 1.175v , 4.8 on 1.325 and 5.1ghz on 1.48v lol.
 
Everyone's standards differ when it comes to overclocking. I have a high standard for stability testing but high tolerance for temps and voltages.

I personally use OCCT AVX linpack as my testing shows it to be the most stressful. During said stress test I don't mind temps below 90°C.

Voltages are a bit of a weird one as what the bios says and what software says differ (due to vdroop). I would stick to staying under 1.4v unless your temps are really good. I have a custom loop so load temps are in the 60s and therefore I have no max v core that I will run.

I try to run the test for as long as possible - after 24 hours you should be safe assuming a stable overclock. At the moment mine crashes somewhere around the 15 hour mark and it really bugs me but I will sort it out after I clean install Windows 10.
