First ever motorist convicted for 'lane hogging'

What is it called when a thread has more trolls than users?

Seriously, it should be absolutely fine to drive as fast as is safe. If the road is dry, visibility is good and there is light traffic it is perfectly safe to be travelling well in excess of 70 mph.

I have always had two modes of driving, in cruise control at 72-74pmh generally in the middle lane but still aware and giving way to anyone who wants to be faster than me. On route to something I am planning for or generally using the time to work through a problem. Or as fast as I believe is safe to do so, I have had my share of knocks and bumps on country roads and been hit a few times in the city... but never had an accident on a motorway.

Modern cars are just a very safe and predictable place to be, I had a rapid puncture at well in excess of the speed limit and was absolutely fine bringing the car to a gentle halt at the side of the road.

The idea that you shouldn't be able to travel safely above 70mph on a motorway in a post 2010 car is like saying tennis should still be played with wooden rackets.

I'm not sure what evidence you would like exactly?

What is it you're arguing against, that the safe stopping distance at 50 is less than 70, or that cars closer together means more cars in the same space?

Of course we're talking about heavy traffic, that's what the last 10+ posts have been about...

Evidence or studies to support the 50mph zones aiding with congestion. I'm not arguing, i'm merely asking a question.

I drive an Audi and yeah I do often fly past in the outside lane, but then again I realise the importance of my safety and that of others. If there is a lot of traffic I slow down, if the weather is bad I slow down, if I see a vehicle not keeping in its lane or moving erratically I slow down.

Now I am not saying I am the perfect driver, but I would like to think I adapt to the road conditions and that of the vehicles around me. I would say I am fairly inexperienced than some forum members (been driving for less than 7 years) but then other than my lessons and test, no one taught to me drive in the manner I do. I think it is common sense and those who cannot use common sense (or do not have any) should not be on the road.

All this rant about drivers... I had to emergency brake earlier when driving home because a cyclist decided to ignore the red lights at a crossroads and just appeared in front of me. I get the feeling if I had hit him, it would have been my fault :(

Nope, no mobile phones, breakfast, smoking etc just all out concentration on the job at hand. :p

Driving from A to B as fast as possible ! ;)

Sod every once else hey?

What people don't seem to realise that if we all have proper lane discipline, we'd all get there faster.

I don't think any one has a good argument against bombing down the outside lane of a motorway *if conditions allow*

The problem arises when people fail to pull left after an overtake, so that's two lanes blocked, leaving one overtaking lane, every one bunches up, slows down and then you get a traffic jam.

It's just another reason why Germany is better. Everyone moves over instantly. If everyone does this, even the guys belting it in the outside lane, very few people are ever held up. Their system works, ours is just full of self entitled arse holes.

I couldn't agree more. Fluid dynamics.

^^^ This if your car can do it and you want to risk it then why not. :D

I am a very courteous driver and respect most drivers! ;) above 100mph! :p

EXCELLENT.
Let's turn this around to moaning about cyclists especially if they are in the middle lane.
Can you also tell me why cyclists shouldn't be on the road because that would make my day.
