Cops not chasing motorcyclists/theives once they take their helmet off

Surely they can just arrest them when they go to the Police Station to retrieve their discarded helmets from the Lost & Found.

Known about this for a while.

Get a lot of our friendly law abiding travelling brethren who do it.
Make off on a bike to the local gypsy camp and the police are too pathetically cowardly to go in and get them because they're afraid of the scum getting upset over it.

Cowardly? That's nonsense. The Police do a generally thankless job, dealing with the worst of society, for a pittance of a salary. They don't always get everything right, but they are human not robots. They have my respect.

It's easy to criticise from behind a keyboard. Perhaps you should join and show them how it's done if you are so hard?

Damned if we do, damned if we don't. Most officers would happily pursue but if they did that against force policy their jobs would be on the line.

I could shoot you in the head and there'd be a reduction in stupid posts. That doesn't make it a great solution :p.

its the lack of harsh punishment, that why they do what they do

if they knew the police would just mow them down they might think twice about it,or better still chop off their fingers

too soft this country is

So is that saying that if anyone was to just ride without a helmet, ignore all traffic and red lights, the police still wouldn't go after them?

I thought they didn't chase bikes at all they just followed via helicopter then guided ground units in after the scum stopped I don't think taking off a helmet is a get out of jail card

We need to focus on who the idiots who suggested this law are, they are the problem and we need to stop with the nannying of scum. Every police force should be allowed to use cheese wire between to lampposts to stop scrotes on bikes, powered or no and if their head comes off straight down the canal wit their corpse.

Knock the wrong person off and you have a week of riots again in London. They absolutely cannot win.

I did wonder if making statements like that would actually encourage crime of this type?

Almost certainly, if you were a criminal and were aware of it, wouldn't you use it to your advantage?

Damned if we do, damned if we don't.

It's something we should not have to accept.

OcUK - where petty theft gets you a death sentence

I'd rather police were not chasing suspects through congested, built up areas (where these thefts inevitably take place) at the risk of injuring/killing someone law abiding. There should be ample opportunity to arrest the suspect at a safer location, particularly if helicopter/video surveillance is available.
