GTX 670 SLI upgrade

I am considering selling my EVGA GTX 670s and upgrading to a single card.

I game at 1440p (when I do play games)

What would the best option be?

1. Stick with current GTX 670s in SLI
2. Sell current 670s and get 4gb 670s?
3. Sell 670s and get a 780Ti?
4. Sell 670s and get a 970 / 980?

Is it true that "the 980 also has a 256 bit memory bus, which will limit it's VRAM to 2.5gb unless you SLI"

I could get maybe £120-£200 for both 670s

Thanks

Well if you can hold off, why not wait to see what the Fury (non X) and the Nano can do?. If they are performing well then it may change current pricing.

I see the 780Ti/970/980 as side grades apart from RAM so if anything, I'd save up towards a 980Ti if you can't wait for the new AMD cards to possibly change things. I know it's a big jump in price but will be more of an upgrade than the options you've listed. Also no, the bandwidth just means at higher resolutions it has less throughput than current AMD cards. Kaapstad has stated many a time that the higher the resolution, the better AMD cards perform. You'll still have 4GB to use.

I upgraded from 670 in SLI to a 970. And it was a upgrade at 1200p.

However, as you are 1440p, I would look at a 980 at minimum. 970 only if you really have to go cheaper.

980ti would obviously be the best.

^Thats my point. A 780Ti can be had for around £250, a 970 for £240.

780Ti slightly beating the 970 but the 970 has 4gb vram over 3gb...

I moved from sli 670's to a single 780, pretty much a sidegrade as has been said. The 980 would be the only NVIDIA card that would offer a slight upgrade. But id also suggest waiting to see what the standard fury is like.

970 and 980 are mid range cards masquerading as high end, compare specs to a 780Ti... :p

What what what?

This nonsense was banded about a few months ago when the 780ti was on offer, but it came to light that not only was this not true and that the 970 is as fast if not faster in most games, but that Game Works titles and tessellation performance is better in the 900 series.

Do not buy in to old tech unless you are looking for a cheap solution.

Also driver support and optimizations will last longer for the 900 series than the 700 series.

He is looking for a cheap solution by the sounds of it or he would have just grabbed a 980Ti I guess.

970 and 780Ti are about the same, sometimes the 970 wins by a frame here and there and the 780Ti wins by a few frames here and there, but generally speaking the 780Ti is a better faster card in most games and comes close to a 980 on some titles and even beats it in some titles.

But reality is the 780Ti is about 10% slower than a 980 unless being gimped by Nvidia game works and then it can be up to a 20% difference depending on title.

I have a 780Ti and it's great for 1200p and 1440p. Unless you want to go into crazy frame rates the 120hz and 144hz sceeens require, then you will need a dual card setup no matter if it's 980's, 780Ti's or 980Ti's.

If you're just a gamer and enjoy a decent level of power a 780Ti or 980 will do for a single screen setup. Also the 2nd hand market is pretty good for the 780Ti's at the moment you can find a 2nd hand 780Ti for anywhere from £200 and down. Then you can get a 980 2nd hand for around £330.

The 10% difference in most titles is not worth £130 extra for the 980 as you may see now compared to a 780Ti. The 970 is another kettle of fish really and one I only recommend to people with weak power supplies these days, it's a good card but that 0.5 gig of slow VRAM may come back to bite you in the future.. Who knows really.

Check this review of the Fury X and the benchmarks in there have all the cards mentioned and compare really.

Thanks. Extremely quick replies!

I could hold out for Fury or whatever else but could be holding out forever as there is always something new on the horizon. I think ill just get a 780Ti and sell the 670s for now

Where are you finding 780 Tis for less than £200? All the ones on eBay are £250+, and 780s are from £200-250. At that price it makes no sense to buy one over the GTX 970.

The Members Market on here, a few days ago a EVGA reference 780TI SC (super clock) went for £200 and a Palit Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 Ti Jetstream was asking £170 for it (Was a bit cheap that one and reality is they go for around £200 and he was after a quick sale.)

70+ more posts and you can get into the Members Market too.

Yeh, I can't see them for that. £250 for a Ti and £240 for a 970. Of those two, which would you go for? I have no mm access as it was removed years ago for me saying someones item was cheaper new

Edit - I've bought an 780Ti (EVGA SC ACX) After selling my current cards it wont have cost much. I figured I don't game much and SLI is sometimes annoying to setup (or not supported at all like Titanfall) £50 - £100 upgrade in the end which is hardly the end of the world. Especially as the only games I have played recently are DOD Source, Redalert and a bit of GTA 5!

I now have an EVGA 780Ti installed.

Benchmark wise there isn't much difference, Valley for instance I get a 3249 on the 780 and 3472 (1080p 8xAA)

Gaming difference though. Wow. GTA V now plays a lot better, I have even increased a couple of settings and its plays fantastic in 1440p. No random jumpiness to 10fps or total meltdown when heading north into the hills. I'm guessing this is the extra 1gb vram and sli issues (if there were any)
