Burnsy / police question (air rifles)

These are two relevant pieces of legislation. Like has been said it needs to be below 12lbft otherwise it requires a firearms licence but you'll never know unless it's tested.

There could be other offences depending on how/where it's used but that's all very situation dependant.

What is the back story?

So that's not a warrant card in my pocket then? Who knew?

I just thought you were pleased to see me!

Well iirc if its causing you alarm. They might be commiting and offence.

Sounds pretty irresponsible either way if you got kiddies running around next door.

Have you tried talking to them? Might pay to point them in the direction of the links provided

we haven't got the kids today

we are not allowed to talk to them, or go on their property, they have an ASBO etc

AFAIK It's perfectly legal if you are shooting at animals considered to be vermin, such as Rats, Magpies, Estate Agents, Crows, etc.

Nice one. :D

If hes

  • shooting within his premises
  • not damaging anyone else s property but his own
  • not shooting any animals that aren't covered by the general license
  • shooting an air rifle that's under 12 ft lbs
  • Not behaving in a threatening or intimidating manner to anyone

.......then hes fine. Probably a bit of an idiot as not many folks are fans of backyard plinking especially in built up areas, but none the less not much you can do.

It's not illegal to use an air rifle on your property or any other properties you have permission to use it on. Most air rifles will easily fire through a fence, which is the reason I sold mine after spending a fortune on fancy fence panels.

As long as he's keeping the pellets in his own garden, there isn't a lot you can do. I used to fire mine unloaded out the window just to make a bang to stop next doors cat beating up my cat, but the main reason I bought it was to humanely dispatch half dead animals my cat had brought in.

I highly doubt he'd shoot a child because he'd be looking at a prison sentence.

But you may find the odd pellet on your property, they do sometimes ricochet.. I shot a target 25 feet away and the pellet bounced back and hit me on the forehead! Glad I wear glasses!

So he's just shooting his fence? What are your specific concerns?

Guess you didn't read my earlier post

Quite frankly the guy holding the rifle is an idiot (has been to counselling about his anger) has had asbo, and is a complete nutter
and as I said we have my nephews and niece around quite often, so I am a bit concerned.

Was hoping it was illegal, so I could call the police

thanks all

Perhaps he's concerned that it might be attempted murder? Maybe his fence ripped him off or something.

Unfortunately, it is legal to be a nutter. ;)

Ah, I see. If they're not going outside his boundaries, then I'm struggling to see any offences.
