Hey all.

Is Activated charcoal any good as the interwebs claim it to be at purifying rooms that smell of cigarettes?

If so whats the best way to go about it and where is the best place to buy it from cheaply that is enough for a room or two.

I don't know but there's charcoal in my shower gel.

There was also a stick of charcoal in the water jug at Sticks n' Sushi the other day.

Hope this post helped.

Smoke smell gets into walls and carpet so they would need to be painted/replaced.

Cant tell you if activated charcoal works.

what do you propose to do with a black powder - spread it on your carpet???

it will work in an air filter but for anything stuck to sofa's/carpets etc activated charcoal is useless.

Decorate, but not with any old paint!!!!

be warned, you will spend hours if not days trying to cover it up and fail, there is only one product on the market that I swear by and its Zinsser Bin White Primer & Undercoat.

this will cover most smoke and kitchen grease stains in one coat and seal any smell in, one word of warning though, you better work fast and be prepped with ladders etc.

this stuff is dry in 45 mins and ready to re-coat with emulsion, its pricey, but you know what they say,

do it once and do it right.

I instead would suggest proper soap washing the walls. I did this at an old flat and got rid of all the grease etc (I can't quite remember the washes name but it's a specific wall wash solution)

(you could then apply a new coat of paint after I suppose.

This is the stuff I use to cover just about any stain. It's great stuff and really works.

Same with my face wash. It lasts for ages too. Spread it liberally across all affected surfaces, massage in and rinse. Worst case scenario is that your sofa and carpets will be gently exfoliated and protected against spots.

Activated charcoal is very good for removing odour from the air, don't think it works for scents in carpets and stuff though.

For carpets I'd suggest sprinkling bicarbonate powder over it and then vaccuming it up an hour later. It absorbs smells. After that hire a carpet cleaner. It's amazing how much dirt those things wash off.
