The reason people become radicalised is because people around them do nothing, or allow them to carry on. It doesn't matter what religion it is, what sect, what cult, what belief system, this is a fact most of the time. We seem to have many radicals within the muslim community and I suggest that's because of the reasons I outline. There are places where hate is allowed to flourish and people around them, whether friends, family or colleagues are not seeing, or worse, ignoring the signs and when they do see them they are failing to do something about it, to own the problem, whether that be confront them or report them.
If I became aware of someone who was preaching hate and violence I would act. How I would act would depend, but I wouldn't ignore it or suggest it was "just a phase". That's how we are where we are and why school kids in America seem to like gunning down their school friends or members of their community who have different coloured skin. It is pretty much always the case that someone knows about these people, has seen many signs but as the great saying goes...
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
I believe this is the problem that exists within the muslim community today in this country and is why the rest of the country has grown tired of listening because frankly they see nothing changing, if anything the problem getting worse. As I have said elsewhere people don't want to hear the other side in the main, they want to see hate preachers, followers, underground networks and other such sects within the community uncovered for the reasons that I outline above. Fairness isn't something people have much time for these days, they just see a small section of society becoming more insular (which I do understand) and a total lack of openness in the broader media on a frequent basis. We then see boo hoo politics which just creates more anger because the majorty, frankly, have started to give up caring about the community or it's religion, for it's not them and they don't understand it or worse, don't want to understand it anymore.
Scary times.
