Greece Elections

It is about whether they accept the massive austerity of the Troika and face years of recession, massive unemployment, civil disorder and the potential of the usual Greek solution ... military takeover or they reject the Troika and get out the Euro and face years of pain with their own currency, massive unemployment, civil disorder and ..............

The ordinary people of Greece, like the citizens of most countries are fkd either way having to bail out the mess created by politicians.

its a democracy, you can't just blame 'the politicians'

they had a huge civil service, very low retirement age, lots of people not paying their taxes, they've still got a huge military budget relative to their size in comparison to much of the rest of Europe... they still practice conscription even

they started getting on track with the austerity measures imposed in return for debt relief and bailout funds then they chose to elect an anti austerity party

Read article in my post #295.

why? the forum is for discussion - if you want to discuss something or make a point then do so, if you're going to cite some facts or quote some statement then that's cool IMO - but when people past in walls of text or youtube with the expectation that someone else take time to sit through or read them and both agree with the article/clip and whatever view the other poster formed from it is rather unrealistic

You are a jolly chap.

It was a suggestion, I found it both informative and interesting. Thought I would share. Did I say you have to agree with it?

I was one who thought '**** them, they brought it on themselves'. It's similar to saying '**** the poor people in the UK, they brought it on themselves'.

I didn't expect you to do anything. Perhaps you could have read it, shared your views/ opinion in the article in question. Then we could have discussed further. Perhaps using said article as a reference point, seeing as it is written by someone who has a lot of first hand experience in Greece, and who has taken their time to speak to the locals.

No need for personal attacks.

no need to get uptight

if you're going to discuss something then discuss it

if you want to share an article, well you've already posted it earlier...

but quoting my post and just stating "Read article in my post #295." get over yourself

Uptight

I bet you are fantastic company.

Anyways, the article in question talks about exactly what you talked about in your comment. I thought it was easy to miss seeing as it is in spoiler tags.

Seeing as you spoke about the exact things that are in said article, I thought it would be of some interest to you. Seeing as you have taken time to post in this thread.

Clearly I was wrong.

'Why?' - always a winner of a opener. :D

I'm not interested in your article... why am I going to waste time reading a wall of text that you say agrees with my pov?

I really don't care - if you're going to discuss the subject of the thread then do so... if you're going to carry on about your article or petty insults etc.. then I'm not interested

Fixed.

I read through the article and while I do have some sympathy for what people had to go through in the past it still doesn't explain the wholesale corruption that goes on in Greece. It's not just large companies and governments that are voiding taxes it's everyone, even people in respectable professions like doctors want cash bribes (how about all those bars and cafe's they won't take card payments and take cash only so they can avoid VAT?). From the outside looking in it would appear this is a way of life and people have accepted it otherwise someone would have tried and sorted it out by now. Are these really the hallmarks of 'proud nation' as the article puts it?

Get Greece out of the Euro, it will better for everyone in long term especially the Greeks. They will still get a large payment from the EU every year as they will be net beneficiary for the foreseeable future.

Its a pretty shrewd move by their PM to be honest. I reckon Greece will vote yes on Sunday, a deal will be done with the EU and that will be that.

That way the PM knows he cant take the blame if people are upset about the austerity that the deal would bring.

Vote yes to what though?
There wasn't any agreement with the EU as far as what measures were meant to be implemented.
Are they voting yes to the 'terrible awful with no concessions' plan?

I think it is time to cut loose, and release no further money to Greece.

Yes to accept an EU deal. The EU will of course do a deal if the Greek people vote yes.
