Really upset an Irish man on Saturday...

In a bar in Amsterdam, pretty drunk at this point. It feels like 50% ignorance on my part and, 50% sensitivity on his.

I made a fairly flippant comment that I always enjoy meeting people from Britain outisde of Britain. Absolute zero malice on my part, and would have happily taken a correction if it needed one. I'd been talking to this guy a while by this point. I think the subtlely is that 'British Isles' is generally ok, but Britain implied he was from Great Britain...I don't know..

He went absolutely mental, shouting he'd "@#*&@ my Queen" and all that. It was crazy.

Felt like an overreaction, but I'm the first to admit I'm not the most versed in Ireland and it's relation to Britain. Should I have expected this, did I overstep the mark?

I went out with an Irish girl and her whole family hated the British, you should hear them going on, however they loved the British (English) handouts. It made me sick.

Aye as many have said he is just a random d**k. Plenty of them over here just like anywhere else! I wouldn't worry about him. Most of my friends would have just ignored what you said, the others would have corrected you but that guy is just a plank.

My view of the people on this site has dropped somewhat from reading this thread to be honest.

One time, on my gap yah, I was with a proud Irishman in a bar, from Belfast. A group of Americans then decided to tell him he was British, not Irish.

That got very awkward.

The "Irish" girl you went with also had a British (English) passport  and presumably lived in Northern Ireland (part of the UK). I mean she sounds like an idiot but you can't blame her from benefiting from where she was born.

English handouts? Handouts taken from taxation that Northern Ireland coughs up for in taxes from both sides of the community? Those handouts?

She and her family probably held Irish passports, I do. (I also get through immigration in the USA far quicker than any Englishman ;))

You'll maybe know, can I claim an Irish passport? I was born and raised in England until 4 years of age until we moved back to Belfast where my Mum was born? I'm thinking no..?

Years ago I was talking to an Irishman and a Korean when somehow, the IRA came up in conversation. The Korean had never heardof them and asked who are they. I just blurted out "terrorists!" to which the Irishman replied "freedom fighters!" It was awkward for a while after :D

Yes you can, you're Irish by descent (their rules cover the Island of Ireland rather than just the Republic of Ireland itself).

Have a look here:

(Under "Born Abroad to Irish Born Parent" NI counts as well)

England for 7 years I think or was it 8. put me off Irish women for life.

I'm not surprised she sounds like an idiot. How does the benefits thing work then, I'd assume that as she's European there's some agreement of mutual benefit between member states? But beyond that why was she living in and in a relationship with a man from a country that she hates?
