Don't get how the Netflix deal fell through. Netflix have unlimited money.

Asked about the deal to make its own version of Top Gear with Clarkson and Co, an ITV spokesman said: “We don’t comment on speculation.”
I watched the last episode on iplayer last night and the thing that struck me was, how come the use of 2 way radios is ok when driving but not mobile phones, whats the difference?
Apart from of course 2 way radios are used by the police and in a commercial basis, eg taxis - but since we are banned from driving with mobiles on safety grounds, I don't see the difference.
On ITV?!!? Oh FFS. They should have gone with Netflix.

Record, play back 15 minutes later, use your remote to miss the adverts, job done.
With a mobile phone you're in a kind of a continuous conversation - both parties are transmitting/receiving until you hang up. Though they are kind of using the radios to chat on top gear in general they're not used for that and are there for messages normally... you're only preoccupied with a radio for the few seconds when you send a transmission.

I thought the the biggest issue with phones was the texting and not actually looking at the road. Talking in a phone/ 2 way radiois no different to talking to someone in the passenger seat. But that's not the reason why driving with a hand held mobile phone is illegal, it's the fact that it's in your hand which is the same as the 2 way radio.
Even though we all know it's the distraction of the conversation that's actually the dangerous part more so than holding something in one hand and having one hand on the wheel.
So the stupid situation we have is that it's ok to have a long continuous conversation on a hands free mobile (dangerous), it's ok to have a long conversation while holding a 2 way radio in 1 hand (dangerous) but it's illegal to have a short conversation while holding a mobile phone in 1 hand (the least dangerous of the 3 scenarios)
As I said, I guess it's just an exemption they had to put in so Police can use them, and so can Taxi's etc, but which has no actual basis in road safety.

Everyone owns a mobile phone yet hardly anyone owns 2-way radios, as for the police protocol dictates that the passenger does all the 2-way radio communication so as the driver can have both hands on the steering wheel which is obviously important when traveling at high speeds or in a pursuit.

You have less control with only one hand on the steering wheel and both your reaction speed and range of quick avoidance/adjustment is significantly reduced with only one hand! Considering hands-free kits are dirt cheap now their really isn't any excuse to be holding phones when driving these days.
Britain's Got Top Gear, sponsored by Iceland and Foxy Bingo.
Yes, but it's been proved that it's the act of having the conversation that is the distraction to the driver, not the holding of the phone.

Else you wouldn't be allowed to hold a cigarette, a drink, an apple or have one hand out the window tapping away on the roof to the groovy tunes your listening to![]()
So its illegal to have a conversation with the passenger next to you![]()
