Hi Guy's

I'm planning on getting a Dell U3415W for my birthday this year and was wondering what graphics card to get also.

People have told me I would be best with a 980/980ti to power the display with newest games (Witcher 3, GTA 5 etc) but wondered if I would be better off with the 300 series from AMD?

I can't seem to find any benchmarks for this size screen in reviews.

a single 290 was pretty good for the likes of bf4 tomb raider and wolfenstien so i would think a 980 ti or fury x would be a good choice, im using 980 sli at the mo and thats having no problems

If you intend to play new DX12 games, definitely Fury X.

Currently there's not a lot in it between the Fury X and 980Ti at this resolution in DX11 games. I suspect the Fury X to pull ahead significantly with the new (already leaked for other cards) drivers that will drop soon, though.

Legacy game engines, I suspect the 980Ti will continue to enjoy a significant advantage.

980 would be an awful choice at this resolution, as the cheaper 390X stuffs it in most games above 2560x1440.

Where is this propaganda that AMD will win hands down at DX12 coming from. I can not believe people are giving it as advice and a reason to buy AMD.

From what we've been told both sides will get performance boosts, after all isn't that the point? I can't imagine the team that's the majority share holder is sitting on there laurels waiting for a performance wooping.
Maybe AMD will get more of an improvement and maybe it will allow there cards to either match the cards they currently lose to or pull ahead of those they match but it's certainly not going to create a one horse race and I wouldn't be spending money based on presumptions about it.
It's all guess work at the end of the day,

Some might make educated guesses while others simply spout rhetoric they've read themselves but none of it's 100% reliable and all of it has the potential to be 100% wrong.

People seem to think AMD will get a bigger boost because of the similarities between mantle and DX12.

In reality Nvidia has been working closely with MS regarding DX12 and if the past has taught us anything, Nvidia tend to be more on the ball with their driver releases where updates to DX are concerned.

So to sum it up, they will both get a boost, no one knows by how much but I'd guess it would be similar.
I do however expect that Nvidia will get the boost first though as their drivers will be out first.

Exactly, and that is the issue I have when I see people using it as a reason to purchase either brand. None of us know and at a gues they will be around each other performance wise anyway.

I guess it really depends on your budget. If your planning on going for a 1440p monitor do you really need a 980ti or fury?

http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/sapphire-r9-390-nitro-8gb-review/

It's a review of the R9 390 which shows excellent performance at 1440p and when over clocked it beats the 970 and even gets closer to the 980 for a fraction of the cost. Guess it also depends on your power supply with nvidia cards requiring less power

290 x 2 here - no prob's - if anything a bit overkill as one was good.

Cheap - I'd go 390
or
A bit more expensive and probably overkill (unless in longer term you are looking to drive 144mhz freesync monitor)- either Fury or 980Ti

I was using a 780Ti (RMA'd) and now using a 970 (KFA2 Infin8 Black) for 3440x1440 so if you can afford a 980Ti (or whatever the AMD equiv. is) then you'll be set.

Hmmmm... I'm inclined to think a single 980ti is just about enough for 3440 x 1440 but you'd probably need two in SLi to be confident of playing everything for the next year or so with everything on max (assuming budget not a problem). Or do we think one of the top end (G1 type) 980TIs is enough (again without having to compromise on gaming detail)

Shame, wouldn't have needed too much more to have one sufficient, feels to me one is not quite enough and two is overkill. Mind you I'm coming from X Fire 7970s at 2560 x1440, I'm just not sure what to aim for when I switch to 3440 x 1440 which at the moment is likely to be with the Acer Predator Gysc/freesync 34" curved depending on reviews

My 980Ti runs GTA V with everything maxed @ a 75fps average on 1440p. Thats the best answer I can give.

How does a 980 Ti perform without GSync in GTA V to smooth out variances once it dips to enjoy those top titles, bear in mind there are no GSync or even FreeSync displays for 21:9 ratios?

I've used a single Titan X at 3440x1440 and have done a complete playthrough of GTA V.

You can set everything to very high and use FXAA only to ensure dips below 60 are rare.
