Just got back from Uni prep course (network and management design) and the head guy of my coarse suggest getting a raspberry pi 2, after pricing up everything id need which came to about £110.

I remembered I have loads of spare bits lying about (as you do) all I need is a cpu, mobo and psu as I have case, ram and HDD's lying about.

Ive I set my budget to that of the PI 2 £110-120, which cpu and mobo combo would allow me to make Linux boxes, Linux/windows server and be able to handle python programming and small amounts of virtualization.

I thought something like

CPU

and

Mobo

Psu

which would cost 106 pound with my free shipping

if you guy can think of anything better id love to see it :), but keep in mind 120 is probably my highest limit.

dual core pentium is multiple times faster than the am1 stuff, not sure how the lesser amount of threads would effect virualization however.

Clock-for-clock in multithreaded tasks the Kabini is actually slightly faster than a dual core pentium.

Note this is the 3.2 GHz G3258. The reason the Pentium looks so much faster is all down to its 56% higher clock speed.

Look at "x264 HD Benchmark - 2nd pass - v3.03" for example.
G3258: 16.87 FPS, or 5.3 FPS/GHz
5350: 11.13 FPS, or 5.4 FPS/GHz

In other words one Pentium core = 2 Jaguar ones. Add on the Pentium clock speed advantage and it's pretty convincingly faster.

But is it worth an extra £26 (+26% of the total budget)? Up to you OP.

will it do what i need (intel/amd i am not bothered, i need to get one that will do what i need it to do), after checking my finances i could stretch to max £150 (i get free delivery ,so £150 is it)

What would you suggest RJC and guys for my requirements as posted above?

What about the Intel Pentium K Anniversary G3258 Socket LGA1150 Processor but the good thing about AM1 is it uses less power about 28watts

The Kabini will probably do the job yes, especially if the recommended system is a Raspberry Pi (quad core ARM CPU at 900 MHz)! Whether you go Kabini or Pentium is up to your personal preference really.

Pi : "£110-120", very small, very low power, can do things only pi's can do, quad core [email protected], microSD slot for storage is like an SSD
Kabini: cheapest (£94), low power, quad core [email protected]
Pentium: (£117), dual core@3

I'd probably go for the Pi just because I'd like to tinker with one. Especially if you've already got a main PC.

In fact, why on earth aren't you just using a virtual machine???

virtual machines are good, but i find you encounter more problems with real ones and since my main focus is on learning how to diagnose i figured why not? and when im done playing i can turn it into something more permanent.
